I did an atmospheric song once before with Virginia but it didn’t quite… meet expectations. This time I think I did significantly better in maintaining a calm and easy going vibe while keeping the focus on the melody and rhythms. Wyoming, the last of the states if going by alphabet and population, is one of my favorites thanks to the natural scenery as seen in the thumbnail (plus Yellowstone national park). Also, as of July 16, this is now my submission to the 2021 NGUAC competition. Enjoy!

Edit: @GRMusic I did end up lowering the reverb on the percussion in response to your review despite my reply to it. This is because, while I did like the reverb in some parts, others were ruined such as the second half which was mostly drums instead of melody and harmony before. I think it sounds better with a more closed percussion section upon reinvestigation. I appear to still be terrible at ambient mixing lol.

Edit 2: Holy crap, 201 listens in 4 days?! At this rate this’ll be my most popular song ever released surpassing Florida at 208 listens. The support on this one is insane, I didn’t really think it was my best because of the lack of melodic complexity but the public clearly disagrees. Thank you all so much!... and now it's my most popular of ALL time!! I have no words, it will likely keep gaining listens for a few days thanks to who knows, some kind of algorithm favored me this time.

Edit 3: 335 listens is crazy!! Wow.

Edit 4: the listens don’t stop coming. Can we actually reach 500?!

Edit 5: HOLY— 500 listens!!! I always dreamed I would get that much on a song on this account. It still doesn’t pass Distracted from the Albin3825 account but it’s the second most popular song I’ve ever released. Thank you all so much for the support!

Edit 6: in response to reviews by the judges, I did end up splitting the drums and removing reverb from just the kick drum entirely while keeping it on the hi-hats. I’ve never had so much pressure to do something here yet about changing the song lol. I also increased the volume of the lead at the “high points” and fixed 2 notes that were odd.

Edit 7: if you would’ve given January 2022 me 10 guesses as to which of my songs would have gotten 1000 views first, my guess 100% would have been this one. And yet here we are, with 3 songs of mine passing that milestone before this one did somehow. But glad it finally reached 1000. For context, this is me in July 2023.

I like the spacey pad at the beginning and the distorted bass. The lead synth at :20 is a bit cheesy, but I like the upbeat mood and quirky percussion. The pad that starts fading in at around 1:05 clashes a bit harmonically with the lead - it sounds like they’re competing for attention a bit too much there. The breakdown at 1:25 came on a bit suddenly, but I like the bright pads at 1:42 and the rhythmic content. The melodic variations later on are nice, and I’m usually not a huge fan of fade-outs, but I think this one works well here. Overall, this is a cute and well-structured piece. Sometimes, the reverb on the pads is a bit too much - I think that might be part of the reason why the harmonies clash a bit at times. Still, solid work all around. Keep at it, 50Steaks! ^_^

50Steaks responds:

To be honest I couldn’t agree more. Back when I made this I was still putting extreme reverb on some instruments for some reason. An interesting point you said about the breakdown coming suddenly, it never occurred to me but yeah there’s no real indication that it would revert back to the intro. I think you hit the nail on the head with this, and I would rate it 3.5/5 as well.

pretty basic but quite pleasant melody & chords! liking the contrast of straight and triplet rhythms. mix is very muddy and messy, would look at the bringing the master limiter level down a little and moving or removing some of the bass elements around so they don't clash as much. way too much reverb on the kick drum. could use some more inspired synth programming instead of the flex preset sounding supersaws and such. good effort though!

50Steaks responds:

Note: I made that on the mobile version, limiting my mixing options a ton. The reverb on the kick used to be even worse, but I toned it down once before, I guess it wasn’t enough? The reason I put so much in the first place was to make it sound more open and wide, like an ambient track would. But if it’s really clashing that much with the bass elements then clearly I blundered.

I really like this one. It feels so much more different than the other ones and I really like how you're starting to mix things up a little. Feels much less ominous and much more friendly and slightly happy. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that. I really like how you had a little reset section where you played the intro again. I think it was really nice and impactful. Welldone 50Steaks. I think you did really well on this one :).

50Steaks responds:

Thank you! I try not to overload one specific mood or genre. Although I started doing ambient tracks in 2020 with Alaska, this is the first one that I think truly accomplished exactly what I wanted from an atmospheric song. I think this is proven by its 430ish listens, making it far and away the most popular thing I've ever released on this account.

Sounds great, but the kick has reverb?. is occupying the mix and some instruments. this great one just need to clean the kick reverb a little more.

50Steaks responds:

For once I think I disagree. The kick’s reverb is there to help make it sound less empty and while I do think it goes a little too far around 2:34 where I think the percussion does take up too much of the mix, Wyoming is an empty state and I wanted to emphasize that in a good way with reverb instead of the kick sounding superficial and not having much weight (except at 1:38). (Did end up following this and fixing the kick shortly after replying what I said lol)

i love how you combine this sort of folksy sense of melody with a sort of industrial design! it is almost krautrock in ways, reminds me a little of Roedelius or Momus? this is my favorite thus far! i have really been enjoying your project!

50Steaks responds:

I had a feeling you’d like this one. If only I knew what krautrock, Roedelius or Momus were (they sound like Roman names). In terms of the industrial design, that’s not really what I was going for originally but if it helps bring in a theme then I’m fine with it. Thanks for reviewing!
