A late night

The late nights could be rather unsettling at times. Especially when looking for ancient tomes and grimoires.
"Grreeeahh~"
Catharine thwapped the ancient book with her thumb as she continued to make her way back to her desk. Carrying a large stack of the desired materials.
"Ssshhh, knock it off you." In the same tone she would use to address unruly children.
The sentient book gave one last "blarf" before going silent.
As Catharine came to the end of the shelf, she found herself stopping mid stride. Turning her head ever so slightly to look over her shoulder and listened.
One beat, two beats, three beats, four beats...
She let out the breath she forgot being held and hurried back to her desk.
