Reviews for "It Came From Outer Space"

What possibly possessed you to use such an awful control scheme?

Anyhow, work on your logo too, that look play listen thing was annoying as all hell. If you want to brand, well, you've already got your users bothered.

As for the game itself, well, when I could play it, it was awfully underwhelming. With bullet shooters you want to be quick, tense, this was just... slow and not all that interesting.

Really well done sprite work, though.

RaveRadbury responds:

We agonized over the control scheme for a while, and we thought this one would work best. Apparently not.

It's not a logo, we're not a brand. It was just something we did for fun and atmosphere. The audio was going for an Earthbound quirky feel. Sorry to hear that you found it annoying.

In response to the awful control scheme we've added a menu option to change the layout to whatever you want.

I don't know what to say in regards to the pacing. It sounds like your browser may have been having some trouble, you may want to try playing it in a different one. Aside from that, if you're attacking the boss, you should eventually finding the game's environment getting faster and more intense.

I hope that you can give it another try and have a much better time than you did the first time.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and provide us with feedback.

Ugh, is there any way to turn off automatic controller detection? I want to use Joy2Key not your autodetection for my contorller. I tried to bind my keys together and the game decided to use its own rules and I basically had better control with the keyboard. Which is pretty nuts.

RaveRadbury responds:

The automatic controller detection is going through your browser. Try to disable that maybe, or you could bind all of the keys to one button that you plan to not use, and then Joy2Key everything else. I hope this helps.

This game would be fine but its abhorrent control setup makes it not even worth playing.

RaveRadbury responds:

An option has been added to change the control setup! I hope that brings the game back into the realm of things worth playing.

I ALMOST gave up because there were no controls. The title screen said to press "A", but "A" didn't actually do anything. After mashing at my keyboard for a while, it finally turned out that I had to press SPACE! WTF? After that, I had no idea what the controls were, so after dying a couple of times I finally pressed Backspace on the menu screen, like the submission information said. (Remember, the player SHOULD be able to play your game with everything IN the game; if they have to resort to reading the submission information, you already know you've done something wrong.)

Anyway, once I FINALLY was able to define my keys (oh, not anything as simple as seeing a LIST of keys, I had to go through and DEFINE them, EACH ONE of them) then I got to play. And...it was kinda fun. Still really didn't have anything in the way of instructions, but it was vaguely clear what I had to do. I still can't find the health meter, though, so I have no idea how many times I can get hit before game over.

RaveRadbury responds:

So sorry to hear that you had so much trouble!

The default message is Press Space, the game defaults to Press A if your browser detects a controller.

Controls and objectives are clearly listed in the Director's Note. We've had a lot of complaints about the control scheme, which is why we've stopped pushing the default controls. By the way, you press backspace in the change controls option, not in the main menu.

I'll put the default controls in the Author's Note for right now, but in the future I will make changes so that other players do not have to experience the confusion and frustration that you did.

The health meter is the stage lights! We wanted the meter to be something you didn't have to constantly keep an eye on, which is why the screen gets darker as your health gets lower.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.

The controls are frustrating and it only grows more so when I attempt to rebind them.

RaveRadbury responds:

I know right? This is why Winners Use Gamepads.
