Let me put this in simple terms, as this is a most egregious example of a fallacy known as "Hasty Generalization".
Your reasoning is as follows:
Some people flew planes into the WTC, killing around 3000 people.
These people were religious.
Therefore, religious people kill.
This is completely false; there are a lot of religious people that are exactly like you in terms of tolerance and are religious for the sole purpose of that it makes them comfortable and happy in life. I'm a light Christian and I really couldn't care less about what your beliefs are, so long as you don't try to force them on me. I'm very open-minded about pretty much anything and am willing to accept what someone says and change what I think if it makes sense to me. I really don't think that saying religion = hate + killing is true; it's just that a lot of people are religious for the wrong reasons and make some think that.
