I suppose I have some explaining to do. This April Fools joke was a last minute thing and although I thought it might have went too far, I wanted to go ahead with this and hope anyone with bad voting habits would wake up and clean their act. Those who have admitted to have been voting poorly, I want to say thanks. You may have had some rough edges but I'm glad you were honest and hopefully you're still going to make real attempts at getting any crap submissions off the portal.
My thoughts on the "leaving post" for the B/P update remain intact besides for a few things. Although I can't say who are the ones who are voting poorly except for those who are like "Yeah I don't bother watching the flashes and just vote by whether it'll pass or not." that I've witnessed, there are some users with suspiciously bad blam to save ratio. Seeing someone with 15,000 saves and only a mere 500 blams does raise some questions but I can't be 100% sure if they ARE those who have been voting 5 on blatantly crap submissions that have managed to pass.
To be honest, I have had times where I felt like giving up the B/P list for good because of the utter shit flashes that get through the portal but on the other hand I don't feel like taking away something that the good users deserve to see, even if the cowardly bad users may see the list regularly and rack up as much points as they can without considering the standards of the site. By knowing viewers here like to hear my thoughts on things, that's a good enough reason to keep going.
I'd only ever give up the list if real life circumstances aren't in good standing, the admins request it to stop or I lose interest in the site and considering how I've been since mid-2009 with genre/icon modding, BBS modding and attending NG meet ups, I don't see myself losing interest any time soon. After all, I've already been on this site much longer than I originally expected.
One last thing, I was actually surprised at the responses I read. When I went and said I was pulling the plug from the B/P updates, I expected a heat rash of comments telling me to not give up at all. Last time I tried changing something or even pass the list to someone else, you all ganged up against me so I was rather surprised this time. The responses were so overwhelming that I was almost tempted to make the retirement real rather than an April Fools joke. I'll keep it up for the time being. The cowardly bad voters may not show their faces at all but if they are out there and continue to hide away, I'm sure their luck won't last forever.
At least things are back to normal now.

I hope you'll agree that even this portal is better than no portal at all.
There was a time when the admins wanted the portal voters to go a little easier on the flashes that come through. Some flashes that were really bad they thought were amusing and chose to save them. Maybe some took that too literally but really, we have to draw a line somewhere with what passes. We may have had plenty of spam submissions by the SS, KK, etc but when it comes to crappy stick flashes passing as well as 4-frame GIFs and blank submissions, something isn't right. And no, none of you need to remind me of those Adolf Hitler flashes.
At 3/27/11 11:27 PM, Emlfuryoflion wrote: I have always thought that submissions should be blammed automatically, if they EVER fall below the 1.60 score mark.
This isn't something I'd like at all. Zero bombing does occur in flash submissions as well as audio submissions and can still be quite effective. The flashes Coop has been co-authored on have been zero bombed including some submissions of mine. My Christmas 2007 submissions passed with 3.50 or around that amount and the second part even got in the top 10 which is actually something considering the small amount of Flash talent I had. If that flash gets below 1.60 and was deleted by that rule, that wouldn't be very good at all.
For low rated submissions that have passed even if they should have been blammed, I'll leave the fate of those flashes to the admins. A lot of submissions have been caught out over the last few months thanks to users going through flashes for their genre/icon modding duties. I've caught a dozen or two that were either blank submissions, broken or pornographic and have been deleted by Tom.

I'll rely on the EGB members to raise the attention of stolen submissions. They're doing a good job already and I'll help them out with a whistle if I have it in mind. I really want to make sure no stolen content gets through as it really killed me when I saw someone stealing one of my flashes and the fucking chodes voted to pass the submission. I'm still bitter about that, even if it was deleted ages ago.
At 3/28/11 08:56 AM, DiMono wrote: I'd say the best way to change it would be to raise the initial standards so that it needs an average of 2 or higher after 200 votes
I remember Wade saying 1.6 was too low of a score requirement in order to pass. This is going back to 2008 and haven't heard anything else since but I'll just hope that a higher score requirement to pass will be included in the redesign. You could argue they should do that right away but if what I hope becomes a reality, it's better late than never.
At 3/28/11 07:18 PM, DiMono wrote: In related news, the fuck is up with all the linkbucks.com submissions recently? The Tau Troops submissions (4 so far) are nothing but crappy loops with linkbucks links embedded in the video. How much do you want to bet at least a couple of them pass?
I did my part to try and get them blammed. All but one passed but I fear if they make more crap, that one flash of theirs that managed to survive is enough for the rest to go through.

It's shit like this that makes me wish YouTube never existed to begin with. I feel more and more that the internet shouldn't have been privileged with a highly accessible video site at all. Before YouTube, it was hard to put up videos on the internet. Another thing about YouTube is that ever since they became big, Newgrounds has gone on a steady decline with activity. More and more animators consider putting their stuff on YouTube and don't even acknowledge Newgrounds at all. Some popular authors on this site have even sold out to YouTube and it really kills me. It's now to the point where Tom had to make an official Newgrounds channel just so they host their own content rather than pathetic wastes of skin putting stuff on YouTube without any permission from the creators.

When I want to do an April Fools joke I always try to build up to it, starting months in advance. A few years ago on another website I started talking in January about how I was taking time at the local observatory, who I was working with, when I would be there, and then I snowballed that into having made a huge discovery, and then I finally revealed on the day that with the help of a couple scientists I'd managed to use the movement of the stars over time to pinpoint the exact age of the Universe, down to the day. Especially when it's something far-fetched, it helps to plan ahead.

Unfortunately, right now I'm working on something else that's eating up all of my spare time, less some brief sanity breaks online. To those it may concern, I won't be on the list next update. I requested that Wade reset my B/P points to zero, and he obliged.
There are several reasons that I requested this.
It's partly as protest of the absurd mass-voting and stat-whoring that has come to dominate the Portal. Honestly, at the end of the day, who gives a fuck about points? The purpose of B/P'ing is to help Newgrounds by acting as a means of quality control, and the moment people start caring more about the points they get from it than the point of doing it, that function is lost and the site suffers.
Furthermore, to all those people who think they really need that next fucking save point, look at me. I had 34616 B/P points, the work of over a year of 100+ daily runs and star paces, and I was able to let them go without any hesitation. I'm glad that I was able to do my part to help the site, but I don't NEED those points.
Lastly, this was a measure of making up for my own point-whoring. I have not always been innocent of doing so---and I have a feeling that most of the people on this list have either done so in the past or continue to actively do so (not mentioning any names, but...yeah). By resetting back down to Civilian, I have thrown away the points that I wrongly earned and can now start over with a perfectly clean slate. It'll take me a lot longer to reach Supreme Commander again---the submission rate is significantly lower than it was in my heyday, and the mass-protecting means I'll be fighting a losing battle---but that's okay.
I'll be on this list again someday, but I'll be doing it on my own time, and in my own way.
Hopefully the Portal will be less of a cesspool by then.

Wow, this is some big news. I understand your reasons and I respect them. But I will not do the same. I worked way too hard to be where I am now, and as a stat whore, I'm proud of what I achieved.
Of course I know that this points mean nothing at all. If tomorrow this site ceases to exist, all my points will be gone as well and I have nothing left but good memories.
But, because I am aware that B/P points, posts, experience, etc. mean nothing at all (well, apart from me enjoying what I am doing here), I don't take this whole thing too serious.
Anway, at least this flash was blammed. It was close, but it got blammed...

It's easy to pass a target that's standing still. But you have your work cut out for you if you truly plan on being #1. If you average 300 b/p a week (which is every week, non stop) it will take you about 16-17 months to reach my current level (around 71K). However, in that time, if I maintain my rate (about 380 a week, which is normal for me) by that time I'll be around 100K. But even I have no hope of making it to #1, as the B/P monsters at the top are pounding away at 400+ per week. You're going to need to really step up the pace a bit to reach your goal - especially if you ever hope to pass THIS EGB member, or Phantom or Coop.
However, my points are not as important as doing the right thing. Yes, blams are hard to come by, but I do blam anyway - even if others just vote 5 for the points. It's not a matter of being the best statwhore - it's a matter of being a good example to follow, and a good leader.
As for your status (and obvious discontent) with the Elite Guard - this really isn't the place to bring up old arguments. Suffice it to say that you are where you are because you put yourself there, through your own actions and comments. I am well aware of your history, and in a way, I'm sorry it turned out the way it did...
byterslinger, credits to you, Coop, Phantom and all the other b/p monsters. You are right, I may not have the fastest pace, what I have is persistence. Do not be surprised at all if you see me around (imagine that you are still around) in, say 2021. Hell, I may have grey hair when I finally become the king of b/p, but if it is what it takes, let it be! >:)
I consider myself as a fair voter. In an average day when I get 35-40 points, I try to blam roughly 10 times and end up with only 2-4 blam points per day. In other words, most of the crappy entries have managed to pass despite my efforts. You see my neutral aura, I do not vote 0 very often even when I blam as long as the entries not completely rubbish. Many argue that the quality of the portal has declined over the years, I disagree. I have been a consistent voter who have stayed long enough to have a say. In my early days, I used to blam about 50% of the submissions. Back in 2005 and 2006, there were many 3-second stick fighting entries that had no chance to pass the portal what so ever, you do not see many of them nowdays. So for me, the quality of the portal has improved over the years.
No more bitching about being kicked out of the EGB from me, there is no use to cry over spilt milk.

Well, I guess that kudos are in order for you, Slash. A shame that you've done this in the way of the statistical suicide, but I understand your reasoning behind it.
Now if only Wade would make a token gesture as an example, by resetting someone's stats, because they're mass voting and doing it for the stats, as opposed to the protection of the flash portal. One or two spring to mind.
I'll be on this list again someday, but I'll be doing it on my own time, and in my own way.
I'm glad to hear it. Sure, your pace won't be as torrid as it used to be, but now that we have established that there are people out there that want to make a difference, we'll try to take it forward and get people to vote What they think a flash is worth, as opposed to what they think it will achieve, for the precious stat points.

Retired, semi-retired and deceased. Boy, you must feel really good to pass some people like that. At least Ehwaz is giving me a run out for this one :P

It's like the comeback of Michael Schumacher in Formula 1 - he won seven world titles, pretty much untouchable by all competitors (Damon Hill, Jaques Villeneuve and Mika Hakkinen were the only drivers to win titles other than him during his golden years, Alonso won the 05 and 06 titles, before he retired.) Now he's back, he lacks the drive and cutting edge to get there amongst the new generation of kids. 9th last year and just qualified 11th for the race tomorrow.
Forgive me, too much petrol in my head this morning :P

*GASP*
That's pretty drastic, but if that's what you want... Of course you're right that BP points are totally meaningless in the end, no matter how you put it. I can understand the rest of your reasoning as well.
But like Haggard said, it took long for me to get where I am now and I'm not gonna take the whole thing too seriously.

I can remember that one. Good riddance. Hopefully the 666,666th submission won't be that lame.

As top B/Pers on this site (honorary in the case of Slash), you all have a responsibility to Newgrounds. Go forth and assist your fellow users.
Coop, when you pass an inactive user, you rank up by one spot; when you pass an active user, you still rank up by one spot. For me, it does not matter as long as I am moving up.

If you're statwhoring, sure. If you're out to pass the competition, then no, it doesn't count. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
Deploy the... it's a yellow button... it's usually flashing... it makes the engines go... whoosh!
Please help fund my horror novel. I'll love you forever.
