He won the four-way, then lost to Kane... But what stood out for me was the how the fans slowly but surely started to get behind him once they realized that Kane wasn't gong to just squash him. I'll say it again, its completely baffling to see a dude that's booked so poorly, yet he STILL manages to get the fans behind him.
I gotta think it's like RVD, you have people there who either watched him in ROH and elsewhere, so they understand how talented he is (or they've gotten tapes or DVDs), or it's just that Punk looks and acts differently then a lot of other characters on that roster. He sort of evokes an MMA, "This is real" element. MVP has some of that too, both those guys are the type that WWE supposedly always says they want. The guys who when they get in the back or get time off don't just go play video games or do other stuff, they are watching the rest of the show, they're watching tapes, they're committed to their business and their craft.
Not only that, Kane had his best singles match in a long time against Punk. I just don't get how the higher-ups can completely ignore this.
Oh, I agree, I don't think it's fair to say Kane just killed Punk. He beat on him yes, but Punk got quite a few hope spots and was even somewhat in control at times. What I don't understand is we have Big Show with bone fractures and shit in his face, that doesn't mean he'll miss the PPV, but hey, it COULD, so why aren't they booking that match last night for Punk to win. Then you can say "Punk has a win over the champion, that puts him in line for a shot" don't say it's at NOC, just say "he's in line for a shot" then you can either have him use it at NOC if Show is hurt, or if you need to do a three way or something to protect Show and his injuries. If you don't? Then you can give Punk a title match later and elevate him based on that. I don't understand why he gets beat clean, and then Miz and Morrison attack. Hey, even if you didn't want to put him over, why couldn't Miz and Morrison interrupt, then you can revisit Kane and Punk working together because Miz and Morrison ruined they're match, and Punks chance at climbing the ladder to a title shot.
The only reason I've ever heard for Vince and crew not being behind Punk (and it's super lame) is that they see him as a "King of the indies" and they don't like having guys on the roster that people think are stars that WWE didn't tell the audience are stars. Goes back to that obsession with control of all aspects of their business, and treating the fans as just slaves who should buy and believe whatever their told to.
