The "Remember my info" feature needs to be fixed - that will be taken care of soon.

A movie needs to have a really low score to get blammed... I gotta update the Portal FAQ.

Coming soon: BLAM animations that reward you with new cartoons based on the # of BLAMS you have???

Works fine now. I'm up to 41 blams. Thanks for fixing it, Tom!

the new pico voting animation looks really cool (you might want to give us an option not to play any sounds though (might get annoying after 100th time). Also, the banner on the portal should have the music off by default like the front page.

I was trying to think of something else more recognizeable to reference. I decided to go with "poop", since everyone here seems to know what that is.

huh? whats poop?

At 2/12/02 11:55 AM, TomFulp wrote: I've been reading the responses to the recent Portal changes, and have continued to tweak everything in an attempt to make it better. We still need to solve the caching issue with the Flash animation after you vote, and we will most likely be adding a profile option so users can switch between the animation or text (for modem users). I have some good news for modem users, though - the new animation is 2k smaller!

As far as changes - I made it so that if you are registered it will leave the score information visible after you vote, instead of having it whip off the screen. I also added the "Next Portal Day" countdown if you have logged your votes for the day, and I adjusted the speed so the countdown is more accurate.

Remember - registered users not only have more voting power, but they don't get any of those full-screen pop-under ads! Sign up today! We will be fixing the log-in process so it remembers your login info when you exit the browser.

I also updated the voting bar. I decided to finally stop hesitating and just remove the "X" button. Although we did set it up to flag movies, so many people flag so many movies that it became pretty useless. If a movie is stolen, racially hateful or excessively pornographic, please email us and we'll look into it.

The upside to removing the X button is the Pico icons are now a little bigger and the voting panel looks less cluttered. I also changed some of the new phrases. Everyone thought "cats pajamas" was much too dated, so I replaced it with terms like "snap!" and "ownz". I also removed the Fred Basset reference, since no one seems to know who Fred Basset is.

Poor Fred Basset... His comic strip is so dull that people don't even take notice of it enough to hate it. To quote Thistler, "He's a boring dog with a boring owner who has a boring wife."

I was trying to think of something else more recognizeable to reference. I decided to go with "poop", since everyone here seems to know what that is.

I'm glad everyone likes the Pico animations! They are all by Jose, of course! There will be a lot more in Pico 2!

Is "ownz" really an improvement over "cat's pajamas"??? at least before it didn't sound all trendy.

I suppose removing the X was the thing to do, especially since those new Admin tools will be underway soon, and you guys can remove those movies yourselves.

Oh God... the New Pico...
at first I wasn't used to it, and didn't like it.
but after seeing the revamped version of our favorite "juvenile anti-hero" I'm in love with the new Pico. The animation is unlike anything I've ever seen in Flash before.

I was never really here.

You reminded me of a story:
I got detention in middle school for saying crap in the locker room. I said "Crap!" and the teacher asked me "Just what exactly is crap?" and another kid next to me said "crap is stuff that comes out of your butt..."

We both got detention. I laugh at it now.

Well, I think "Cat's Pajamas" is much funnier than gangsta speak.
Kids these days... they don't know from funny.
They turn on Mad TV and think that it's "the bomb".
*Sigh.*
I think I turned into a crochety old man the day I graduated from high school.

Replace "Fred Basset" with "Dilbert" if your goal is name recognition.

If you do have a level-up animation, will those of use that 'missed' the early animations get to view them from the Grounds Gold account or something?

Yeah, Tom! I'm sure this could be done for registered users who've logged in - just make users specify how much their time varies from your time (display the current time so there can be no doubt) and then vary all tima variables by the amount the registered user has specified.

T'would be a bit of work, but it would be most excellent.

I have a great idea! people who tell the truth and only use X to remove it cause its stolen should see the X but other people who abuse should not be able to view it please put this in to consideration ty Slim Manning

Yeah, but I thinhk that that system might be a bit too hard to implement. How would you decide if someone's abusing it?

To be honest, I was guilty myself of voting X instead of 0 on movies I hated when I was at a low level and was less sure about how the portal worked.

Maybe you could make it so that only registered users see the X, or only users over a certain level see the X...

I actually think the score should be raised. It would make people really work their asses off and produce better quality flash to have it stay in the portal.

Coming soon: BLAM animations that reward you with new cartoons based on the # of BLAMS you have???

Bad idea. That promotes people to just vote zero all over. I mean, the "sacred" blam is a great thing, and it's fun to happen across, but people that seek to just blam blam blam vote zero's on stuff without even watching the movies.I think

I think all of these animations should be rewards of grounds gold. I mean, you need some, badly. No offence, but I'm not sure if I want naked pics of you :)

Anywho, I think those level up animations should also be available to those of us with the higher level (more stuff like GG benefits), because I definitely don't wanna miss out on those. Highly ranked NG users don't really have too many benefits.

Trite closure: Anyway, great job with the site and keep it up.

I dunno... isn't there any room for retro on the portal? :_(

Please bring back the cat's pajamas and leave a tiny bit of retro embedded in the Portal system.

Hey, I like the new changes. It's really cool seeing how far this site has gone over the years. Keep up the good work, Tom!

Response to Continued Portal Updates... 2002-02-13 08:57:54

All these changes are/will be great! I'm not too excited about the "BLAM! for new animations" idea though, it's probably gonna give me nightmares, the way everyone will start blamming everything just for the sake of getting to see great movies. Then even the good stuff will probably be blammed off before most people get a chance to see it :( !
I don't really like the gangsta language on the voting system, it sounds all goofy somehow. Maybe it's because I'm in Europe and they don't use that here ;)

Oh, how come League Bowling didn't take first place in the Portal until a week after it was submitted? It had 220 thousand views, and still wasn't even IN the Portal Top 50, with a score of 4.13, which was way higher than "why a squirrel shouldn't smoke pot". Didn't you want your own movie to be at #1 at first, and then you changed your mind or something?

Movies don't get moved into the main top list until a week after they are released. It gives them time to achieve a more realistic score before putting them ahead of everything else.

The portal gets updated every week, and that is when they update turd of the week, weekly feature, etc. Squigo and XX must have been released on Monday or Tuesday, whereas League Bowling was released on Thursday at like midnight. That's why it took so long. It was the same way with the squirrel cartoon.
