Last month we celebrated our sixth annual Pixel Day here on NG, with pixel art, games, animation and chiptunes. Determining the winners has been a real challenge this year but here we go:

Top Five Games ($170, $110, $100, Honorary Mentions)

It was a close one between AdventNEON and Ugby Mumba 3, both first-worthy games with loads of passion and charm. Hunter with a Top Hat is short but will inspire game devs with the atmosphere it creates. Overdisk oozes style and has a fun take on the Disc Room concept, while Mad Sisters’ Week Off is pure joy with loads of familiar pixel cameos.

Thank you @Waterflame, @JohnMontoya and @JohnnyGuy for music judging assistance! This was an extremely difficult category, with everyone having unique favorites. Hoping this final list does the category justice; so many of you hit it out of the park this year!

Top Five Animation ($170, $110, $85, Honorary Mentions)

That’s right, we moved @Luis into the animation category this year.

We really enjoyed Berserk Forces Karaoke but left it out due to the music sourced from Berserk.

Thank you everyone who turned up this year and made Pixel Day special. This event was originally suggested by @JohnnyGuy and here we are six years later, with more great stuff every year!

If you missed it, check out the Best of January. The game for the month was UNITRES Dreams, another great pixel game that hadn’t been part of Pixel Day.

Two weeks remain for entries in our Flash Forward Jam; we’re making new Flash games to run in-browser via Ruffle. The latest classic game to switch over is Portal Defenders.

We said people could upload pixel art they had already made, if they hadn’t shared it on NG before. Maybe next year we’ll do a specific theme so everyone has to make an original piece just for the event.

I uh, I'm struggling to find the words here to be constructive but pitting work made specifically for the event up against a roster of infinite historical legacy comes across as unfair as well as a few other things. I hope some consideration for this is made in the future. It seems like the judges were aware of that, which is why the work from a world renowned pixel artist isn't sitting in first place. Its just the age of the piece makes it a bit ridiculous to make it out like it had anything to do with pixel day. I hope you understand where im coming from at least.

Ay, thank you so much for the runner up spot in the movies category! I'm glad I could share that with the NG community. Congrats to the rest of the winners in this year's Pixel Day!

Ayyy! Congrats to the winners!! So much great stuff this year!!!!

Yeah, this was definitely my reasoning for submitting. I hadn't visited Newgrounds in forever, but the fact that they were promoting pixel art intrigued me and I had several friends who were submitting here who encouraged it. I'm thankful for the HM award but I do understand that given the submission's nature as an older piece that it likely shouldn't have been in the running for any cash awards, rather just a piece to support the event. You can take it down if there's truly any controversy arisen from it, I don't mind - I've just been enjoying submitting to the community.

OH MY GOSH! Thank you so much for hosting Pixel Day!!! It was a lot of fun and it was a great experience to share with so many talented artists and developers!!!

Next year will be even BETTER!!!

Honored to be among the 5 selected games and congrats to the winners, well deserved ! Pixel Day is really an incredible event, thank you to everyone who upload their cool stuff and to all the people involved in the organisation !

One of the goals of Pixel Day is to get more pixel artists to give NG a shot and every year a few new people do come aboard and that's been really rewarding. Seeing all of your art has been a big highlight this year!

For next year I think we'll treat Pixel Day as an event with an optional contest; contest entries will need to be made specifically for Pixel Day and premier that day using a secondary tag, like pixelday2022-contest.
