Can't stop working on my submission even though it's past the deadline. I should take a break and prepare for next round, in case I get that far. A musician's work is never done.

I was tempted to feel this way about my Round 1 submission until my fiancé gently told me that it was time to give it a rest -- I would otherwise spend an eternity twiddling away at knobs, trying to get the mix right.

Thats true. Whenever a few days have passed and i am listening to something i have made i always wanted to change little things. That happens again and again. But i try to ignore this feel so i can compose more pieces in general and try to use the impressions i won in my older stuff for the new pieces.

I'm exactly the same, and you have the right idea. If you go back too much you'll ruin what good you had, it's all about learning and making sure it's perfect next time. Listening to my submission I can hear so so much that needs adding.

I did a song.

Haha, well whatever happens... I've already found a ton of amazing artists to follow, gotten to push myself into a new genre, and received some fantastic feedback! So it was completely worth participating up until now! Not that I wouldn't mind the opportunity to use what I have planned in the next round! >=P

I wont lie, even coming from someone who exclusively produces House music under record labels, I still get worried with you damn orchestral producers. The feeling is mutual mate.

Makes no difference to me what colors you use, as long as you're a good songwriter.

Also, a majority of the orchestral entries had a fair blend of electronic elements.

I think there was a bit of logic behind separating people into genres, but I cannot help but think that the NGADM, and ultimately the rest of the Audio Portal, is predominantly split between EDM and cinematic. Then you have the few diasporas of hard rock and metal, Ethereal Wave, and anything else that doesn't fit into those bigger circles.

Heck, I don't know what genre to place 'Oceans Wide' in, other than a mix of video game, Ethereal Wave, pop and CCM (which makes it fall into Other -- Miscellaneous in this particular case). Go little.... um.... uh.... chimera-mecha-gundam-whatever you are, fly swift and sure.

Response to N G A D M '14: Group Stages 2014-08-23 08:01:28

I've also noticed that the NGADM has a history of containing a lot of orchestral artists and orchestral judges. I personally think there's one predominant reason for this which lies in what the aim of most electronic artists is as opposed to the aim of most orchestral artists . A lot of great electronic artists get themselves signed to a label and stop submitting to Newgrounds because of it.

Orchestral artists, on the other hand, have nothing stopping them from staying on Newgrounds, since their goal usually isn't to get signed to a label but to get their music in games/movies, so it is in fact better if they post music here since it widens their portfolio and exposure. I mean, there are some exceptions of course. I'm sure plenty of orchestral artists have left Newgrounds to move on to greener pastures, and plenty of electronic artists stay here and don't get signed (or get signed but continue posting music here), but that's my educated guess on the matter.

As for the lack of metal? Well, there's a lack of metal in the Audio Portal in the first place! Go through the auditions and you'll find that the percentage of metal/rock/pop stuff is very small. My guess for this is that metal is less of an "accessible" genre for people to make, since it almost REQUIRES you to have an electric guitar, know how to play it and have gear to record yourself, and not everyone has those prerequisites.

Those are my guesses as to why there are so many orchestral composers compared to other genres. Having said that, the electronic turnout this year was pretty big! I quickly went through the submissions, and here's a breakdown of the main genres and the amount of submissions in each (using my own judgement of course).

Techno/EDM/IDM: 25
Orchestral/Classical/Cinematic: 17
Metal/Pop/Rock: 11
Other: 9

As you can see, there's more electronic than orchestral music. Hell, a lot of the orchestral music have electronic/hybrid elements in them too! So yeah, it's a pretty diverse turnout this year, with a heavier amount of electronic music than previous years I think.
