This is a character i did for "BAFA", the voting is happening right now so if you would be nice enough to vote for mine it would be appreciated-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A69OljnyRFM
Sorry for that little shameless advertising lol.
He was kinda inspired in the dude from Disney's "paperman", also while i was doing the early sketches i accidentaly made his eyebrows like rectangles and i loved how it looked, so i ended up making the whole design kinda "blocky"
Buncha sketches from him, most of them are really bad but u know..
This was an exercise from the book "Drawing on the right side of the brain", just a little value study, altough i can clearly see all my errors everywhere lol, i did it eyeballing though, and i was copying from the actual book and the room wasn't that well iluminated, so ye
Also that painting was "Steichen's self portrait with brush and palette"
Your artwork is awesome!! im learning at the moment ill probs never be as good but ill just have to keep trying! haha

Ah, don't say that, if you practice enough and take it seriously you can be even better than me, friend! And thanks ^^
How long have you been doing art seriously? Not just for fun
You're flexible and have an odd/moddy style. Not a bad thing!

Umm... I've been taking it more seriously since mid 2012, when i decided i wanted to learn flash for animations, but at that moment i was mostly just learning how to use flash and how to animate, later probably mid 2013 i got tired of animating and centrated into drawing, i was always being lazy and i barely practiced, but i was already watching tutorials and stuff, altough i don't think i improved much during that time. It was in the beggining of this year that i bought a bunch of books, made a schedule and decided that definetly wanted to take it REALLY seriously, i'm currently trying to print in my head the most basic stuff, human anatomy, values, gesture drawing, composition etc... Also i'm getting into animating a bit more again because i want to enter NATA this year.
Yo dawgs sup, here's this thing, i got super motherfuckin' bored and thought "Yo dawg, what if i took one of those drawings for kids to colour and colour it with good values and having design priciples in mind? Dawg?"
Of course there's no color, why would there be color? And it's half done, but it looks pretty :3
Also hopefully during this month i'll be doing value studies like this one every day, the original painting was "Madame X" by John Singer Sargent.
Wow i don't know why the image got so dark, well anyway here's a comparison with the original:
Yo Dawgs, i'm pretty sure you can tell which one is mine xD

Nah i'm pretty sure that to learn to shade properly you just need to understand how light and shadows work and practice, but if you wanna stand out, u gotta be hardcore like me and do this exercise lol

Studies are the way to go, they look great man! You'll notice the things you pick up from them will transfer to your personal pieces. :) Keep it up!

That bunny chick on the bottom is looking awesome, I think you should expand on it some.

What he said, I thought that when I looked at it, just forgot to mention it.
Hey @Rhunyc, nice to see you here in my humble little art thread, hehe. Yeah i'm doing these studies to get better at values, composition, and all that, i do kinda well at copying them but i struggle when i try to apply them to anything i did from imagination, so hopefully i'll get something out of doing a lot of these.
Also, if you guys say so, i might try to develop that bunny girl further, i started doing her for the art weeklies when the challenge was to create an original character everyday, she's was inspired in Hotline Miami. Unfortunately i didn't feel her and i just left her as a shameful dirty sketch, xD.
Study from a photograph, still as hard as copying a master painting.

Looking good, and yeah you might not feel it at first, but you'll notice it eventually. One thing, espc. with, like this one for example, the high contrast in darks vs. lights. It really helps you realize how dark and how light images really go and all the shades in between. :)
Also, Hotline Miami is the shit! I'm sad I didn't notice the connection, but I see it now after you pointed that out. Dooo it.
Gonna put this here in case that i don't finish it. @Rhunyc yeah for example if you look at the first value studies i did, the lightest values are not right, i think that's because i refused to accept that they were lighter than i thought, these studies train the eye very well.
Time to upload a buncha shit i've done lately.
First, a guy with a green jacket, that's it. It was my attempt at drawing with solely fast and confident strokes, i like the energy the drawing has.
A value study, it isn't actually finished but i'm not gonna keep doing it. I've improved my hard edges a lot.
