I decided to give The Orville a second chance to not just be episodes of star trek with Seth MacFarlane jokes thrown in and............. not impressed.
Season two: episode one. The crew need dates to go to an alien ceremony. Ok, alien ceremony is general sci fi, though I'd argue Star Trek did it before it was a trope. With it there's a healthy dose of that episode where Picard dated a crew member. It ends with the captain talking to the new pretty lady cartographer. Looking up the episode now. Lessons: season 6 episode 19 Yep, new potential love interest was also a cartographer on Star Trek. You couldn't even give her a different sci fi job to pretend it's a new idea?
Season Two: Episode two. Someone's addicted to the Holodeck. Yeah he's using it particularly to get his groove on but the holodeck addiction episode was done better with Reg Barkley. Hollow Pursuits: season 3 episode 21
Both direct lifts. They seem to favor next generation, with occasional nods to the original and I've noticed smattering of Voyager. They might be stealing from DS9 but I never saw that. I heard it's good
