I would say that it was a great year for movies. There were also some actors that I never noticed before that I now look out for. Which were your favorites this year?

My top 10 for this year.

never heard of that movie
I've seen a few this year. Mostly comedies but a couple sci-fis. I only saw one animated movie this year which was Brave. It's actually one of the few animated movies I like mostly because of the visual humor. I also liked the plot better since it didn't throw you into the story like most movies do now. I also saw Total Recall the other day and I loved it.

The problem with the Avengers movie is you know the Avengers are just way to powerful for the villan in that movie. There was no suspense. It's just another big box office comic movie.

The Avengers was fun and attractive which is all well and good, but plotwise it was very meh. There's not even anything to the aliens that invade, it's just "Loki done did some shit so now these guys are coming out of a whole in the sky and we gotta go kill all of them."
You look nice today.

Cereal is pretty cool. If you're cool you'll add me on Steam. Also, Letterboxd.

This.
In any case, I really didn't see many movies this year, and I don't think I'd call any of them good enough to be the best. Avengers has been explained; Dark Knight Rises was a step down from its predecessor; Snow White and the Huntsman was good, but not that good. This is pretty much the extent of this year's movies I've seen, so I'm sure I missed out on a lot, not to mention all the epics that just came out (Hobbit, Les Mis, etc.) because Hollywood thinks the only way to get into the Oscars is to debut in the last two weeks of December.
As far as things that aren't movies but could easily qualify, I think one of the big surprises this year was Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. Granted, it had a box office budget to work with, but there was a very strong focus on character development, even in the action scenes, which 343i honestly didn't have to do. So kudos to them for setting the bar higher - at least in their marketing material.

2. Django Unchained

I'd give it a 6.5 or 7/10; enjoyable but definitely not movie of the year.

Well for me it'd be Moonrise Kingdom. It is currently my favorite movie.

I still need to give this a watch. Not sure which way it'll go for me, I'm a fan of westerns, but not a fan of anything Tarantino has done in the last 10 years.
Thinking on I still need to see The Girl and Dredd, too.

For better and for worse the film is very action heavy. While I feel like criticizing it for just blowing shit up instead of doing something subtly I have to remind myself that this is a Tarantino movie, which is laced with action to give it more humor.
I enjoyed The Avengers a lot, yes it's not amazing plot wise but its a good comic book movie and that was the point. Skyfall was brilliant and had great subtle nods to the old school bond films, Prometheus I personally enjoyed a great deal as well as The Dark Knight rises.
Heavy Vibes
I looked at the Wiki list of 2012 movies to really peg all the ones I enjoyed...
- Chronicle
- The Hunger Games
- The Cabin In The Woods
- ParaNorman
- Premium Rush
- Cloud Atlas
- Django Unchained
Looking at that Wiki list made me realize how much has happened this past year, especially seeing that The Hunger Games was released in March...seems like that movie has been out for ages. Gosh, the entertainment world just keeps moving faster and faster, to me. And thank you TheMaster for pointing out Samsara. I wanted to watch that so I'm going to try to now...
I heard Samsara was really good. I wanted to watch it when it was playing in the festival but never got around to it.
