what's wrong with that? the fans expect a theme out of their bands, something they can come to expect. there's obviously a threshold to this, you don't want to become predictable, but having a reliable soundscape is something I don't frown upon.
I agree with both of you. You want to create a somewhat unique trademark sound, but at the same time you don't want to create virtually the same melodies with minimal changes again and again.
I find that taking a break from composing and listening to other songs, looking at and listening to sheet music of songs in Guitar Pro, can help with inspiration. Take something good, try to make something similar and your own style will just flow as you write it. That's how it works with me, anyway.
