I thought this was great for a short little playthrough. I was particularly impressed with the level of polish and detail you put into both the foreground and background. The slight swaying grass and little homes with lights on in the back really showed you cared about the project.
Going forward, I bet you could expand on the gameplay by adding a wall-jump feature. I feel like you could make this more difficult and that would just add to the overall feeling of accomplishment. The combat was good and simple. Adding a multi-directional hitting weapon (up, down, forward) would be cool. Always a fan of mouse as a weapon so maybe Lclick melee and Rclick shooting weapon? You could use the "whip" as a device to help swing to challenging places.
I love a good 8-bit game and there's a lot of potential here. Thanks for making it!
