Reviews for "Aztec: Tactical Conquest"

1 Star instead of 0, because I like the history you tried to invoke. The problem is that the game is flawed throughout. I think the big problem is that the mechanics got too complex for the simple representation. Elevation, obstacles, terrain types, really weird definitions of what a "straight line" is (up and down don't count? Huh?)... The game just doesn't work. The "oops!" mechanic makes any semblance of strategy impossible. All you can do is rush all your dudes at the enemy leader and hope they can actually get to attack.

Some other random complaints are that enemies push my units, but not vice-versa, the ranged enemy units aren't easily distinguished from the melee units, archers' attacks do weird things like hit 3 different squads for 0 damage instead of hitting the one I aimed at for 3, muskets are under-powered and underrepresented for the time (seriously, they did so much damage that people literally stopped using armor once guns became available), and women are over-represented. I attacked a village that was nothing but 40 topless chicks. Where are the men? Why are all my swordsmen chicks? The Spanish conquistadors certainly didn't recruit that many, if any, female fighters.

I think similar games would be improved by switching to a more regular grid- or hex-based map, making obstacles and terrains and such simpler and more drastic, by reducing randomness in general, and by letting you build your own armies. I didn't like most of the ones I was given.

Get rid of the "oops" and we'll see about a better rating.
