Reviews for "Hug Marine"

It was exceptionally cute, the controls were solid, and I loved the concept style (though in a lot of the areas the odd tiled backgrounds almost made me a little sick when the screen was moving), but apart from the lack of checkpoints, the gameplay was just too repetitive. I think if you made this a game with some more complex levels and turned it into a puzzle platformer or gave some power-ups and upgrades to get around/get past obstacles you would have injected a lot more variety into this and made me want to keep playing. I'd love to see this idea expanded on in the future.

Totally agree - was my first game made during a game jam, in Stencyl, so I lacked time and knowledge, but my next project will have no time limit and what I've learned here. Glad you enjoyed the concept, and sorry about the backgrounds - think I'll patch those out soon, made me sick too!

In the Grim Darkness of the 41st Milennium, we can only give hugs to the xenos...
Very original concept for a sci-fi platformer, good controls. Just feel like there are some elements missing, but it ain't bad at all.

Controls were somewhat unresponsive, but good gameplay and nice pixelated style :D

I to say it but i love this awesome game. Sweet soundtrack. You put in a lot of work for this game. but it is short and the story line is confusing. The creator deserves a big hug for this game.

failnaut responds:

Thanks! Sorry the story didn't make sense - you're a marine trained to make his way through hostile environments to hug aliens (rather than shoot them, etc).

Very cute, well executed, and following the path was easy thanks to the excellent mechanics... but there's nothing to do but follow the path. I agree with belovedblack -- I'd love to see a metroidvania game with this engine and character. The solid platforming, and variety of level graphics (complete with nice touches like the arrows and initials in the beach palace backgrounds), would sustain a much longer game if there were interesting goals.

failnaut responds:

A metroidvania eh? You'd be pleased at what genre the sequel has been set as since the outset. ;).
