I want more stories like this one in games!
(Heads up to readers: minor spoilers and massive text)
I was so impressed by this game that I actually downloaded Stencyl just to check it out!
[Basics]
I found it structurally to be a very basic platform game with very easy levels to navigate through, and the basic instructions is explained at the very beginning of the game in the background through a graphical guidance.
[Story & Art]
The story unfolded jaggedly but with the combination of text, visuals and game play it conveyed with some success to me as a player. I did figure out most of the story on my first playthrough, but it was a bit confusing regarding the demigod Uzaza but after replaying the game and reading the author's explanation for the story, the last pieces of the puzzle were finally put into their proper places and I really loved the story!
The whole theme and the story together was some really great work and the dark theme is just brilliant! To me, it's like a Giger and Lovecraft crossover making up an awesome surreal mix! I don't know what inspired you but whatever it was I'd heartily recommend you to keep at it! The intro was really something too, It really captivated me and set the atmosphere right there! A beheaded god falling down to a planet: Fantastic idea!
Regarding the in-level story text it is an ambiguous choise as the god's alien language blinking into english makes it hard to understand sometimes without spending time looking at it but then I think also this is an interesting way to use storytelling so enjoyed it even if I was a bit unsure about Uzaza place in the picture.
[Music & Sound]
Loved it! Short tracks but great choice and great sound effects! The cutscene's short looping music with the female crying of pain sound really put the atmosphere of the game into an new level, although I thought the male god looked fat. I want the soundtrack, by the way.
[Mechanisms]
Seems to work properly but the controls could've been tweaked some more and the character's response is a bit slow but it wasn't a hassle to play with just a tiny bit annoying at first.
[Level Design]
The level design is quite basic, like a random platform situation for experimentation but there are parts of the game that I liked and seemed that you spent some time with it but the platforming could've been expanded upon and designed a little better, instead of putting a key there, push this switch over here and create some platforms here and there, jump, wait, jump etc. That said, some parts I liked and some were a bit too basic.
[Game Design]
Generally I enjoyed your design and I enjoyed the fantastic pixel-art but I would recommend you to put some more thought into the level design. I liked the story and that the main character gets to be reborn every time he dies and through a tree nontheless! Really some awesome thinking there! The whole concept and the story is awesome but the execution isn't as good as it could've been and the game is a bit too short but it is still a good story-game that I played entirely through when it got through the NG portal, before You even added meta-gaming to it. Also, I think the whole Uzaza thing could've been either skipped or expanded upon as it seems it wasn't thoroughly thought through.
[Summary]
I loved it! I recommend it to players who enjoy platform games with dark otherworldly themes with a good story to boot but requires a few playthroughs to understand completely. I really enjoyed the game! I hope to see more from You, Amon26!
