Very Epic!!!

*sigh*

I don't think I've ever put out a review for the Total War series before, and I think it's because I don't want to be the awkward truth guy. The game has been dressed up as much as any I can see- the units are wonderfully designed, the sound effects and music are exactly what they need to be, the story, item, and market functions work adequately, and the backgrounds have been done with fantastic detail. The problem is that it just all detracts from the main problem which I KNOW I'm going to get flak for, but needs to be said.

As an actual, functional, conceptual game? Epic War is just... not... good.

You want to beat any level? Play the knight, charge forward, spam heal spells.
You want a more in-depth strategy? Wait for your heavy melee units to get to the front, send 'em forward, then have everyone charge everyone at once, spamming heal spells on your knight. Don't even bother doing anything with your ranged characters, because they're completely autonomous- they immediately stop and attack the very second the foremost enemy enters their ranged, so not only can they not attack anyone in the back of the enemy's troops, they can never be in range of the encroaching enemy melee units, which will never advance forward because your knight and his heal spell is an indestructible, ever-regenerating wall they're practically flicking styrofoam peanuts at. Seriously. Even on the enemies which could actually take chunks of his health away, his heal spell's mana cost had already refunded itself.

This is really as much strategy as I can possibly muster in this game, and I have been playing it for thirty minutes, desperately trying to think of some new element to make it less boring. I have failed miserably. For all its glamour, Epic War just repeats itself too much to ever really be called "epic."

7/10 for amazing visual and audio work, but... just not much to do here.
