Reviews for "Lockout"

For a little background, I am a (beginning to quit) pianist who knows absolutely no terminology whatsoever connected with these types of songs (though I do at least have a decent ear for music). I apologize for where I will make wordy descriptions of a certain instrument/section because I do not understand the terminology.

With that aside, I'll get on to the actual review. Good parts first.

I love the flow and energy throughout the song. The squeaky soprano is unique (and is enough to make my brothers detest this song haha, I like it though) and brings something new and interesting to the table. It helps to energize the song. The transitions are very smooth, which is great. The melody is just awesome and isn't over-repetitive. The balance between instruments is good. In summary, the great melody and skillful use of it as well as the energy flowing throughout the song are the main parts of what makes me like this song.

Now, on to the critical part. Hopefully I'm not too nitpicky here.

I think enough people have told you about the bass, so I'll skip that.
You probably also know the problem from the beginning up till 0:30, so I'll pass over that too.
The buildup to the first drop (from 1:15) is relatively dull and uninteresting. It needs a little more variety (by the way, you did very well with the buildup to the second drop).
Next is one of the biggest problems in my opinion. All the piano parts, although carrying a beautiful melody, have sharp accents all over the place that don't fit in at all. What could be a very smooth, flowing melody is rudely interrupted by accents everywhere which simply disrupt the flow of the piece. They don't provide any support and make the entire part just sound off (okay, I might be nitpicking too much since I'm a pianist and obviously synthesized instruments won't sound as good as real pianists on real pianos). However, I really think that the accents destroy much of the beautiful flow what would otherwise be there.

I think that's about it. I liked this track a lot and will go check out some of your other songs. Have fun creating songs!

Lockyn responds:

Thank you man, your feedback is greatly appreciated! synth piano doesn't really compare to real playing even with humanization techniques I feel you.

Pretty damn good song. Like the beat

I like it. It's definitely a decent track indeed, but there's this one thing that's missing in the whole track and needs it so much.

Bass.

Seriously, while everything else sounds great and pushes energy right into your face in a good manner, there's just not enough bass to support the whole thing. It's like missing the whole ground floor plan. Seriously, the whole low shelf is gone. This may probably be because of the track's semi-minimalist style, which fits for the purpose pretty well.

I'd still recommend taking an another look at it in your next track, mate.

There's also an another complaint I could think of: There's some odd volume levels going on in this track.
Try switching between something like 1:54 and 5:12, for an example. There's definitely something weird going on with the decisions how loud some specific instruments are, piano being the most obvious example.

But yeah, I don't have nothing much else to say. All I can do now is to snip it down to a simple sentence, telling you that it's a pretty good track indeed. I liked it.

I might as well add you to favs for more tracks in the future.

Lockyn responds:

Hey man, thanks so much for your concise and honest feedback! I agree completely with your comments on the bass in this track. I actually didn't even notice really until you mentioned it and I checked the EQ on the master channel - holy crap you're right. Not intentional. Perhaps it would be better if I used proper headphones/speakers to mix instead of laptop speakers LOL. Anywho... I get what you're saying and I'll have to keep that in mind. Volume was another issue I had in arranging the track - I couldn't really get a feel of transitions, and I hope I managed to make it listenable anyways despite the huge volume changes. Thanks for stopping by man, really appreciate it and I'm glad you liked it! BTW. I did follow you and Alan on SC, but I guess I might as well follow here too? :D

Some really nice rhythem and beats with this one and some nice mix in there too, So everyday I look for stuff and enjoy all that the portal has to offer, so nice track here some solid sound and a good submission anyways great work

~X~

This song gets better every time I listen to it. Still don't like it though. 4/5 at the most.
