Squid Walkthrough
So, I noticed a lot of people seem to have difficulty on the squid level. It's okay, it is difficult, but not in the sense of "unbeatably hard" so much as "this requires a strategy that the other levels in the game don't prepare me for". For this reason, I thought I'd use this review to give a walkthrough of the level.
Assuming you're level 15 (where I was when I took on this level)...and bear in mind that there is wiggle room for your own approach to this level...
I maxed out my troop attack, defense, speed, and agility as high as they would go. This is a debatable tactic. In my opinion, you will never directly use troops to beat a boss creature. However, in this level, in which the boss starts leveling the field with nonstop "fireball burst" attacks when the timer runs out, you have two factions to deal with for about 7 minutes. Hence, you need maxed out troops to stay alive, but only just. Don't try to dominate your opponents. Carve out a niche, keep your head low, defend your few buildings, and make sure you have at least 1 building (or enough troops en route to a building that they can take it) when the boss starts wiping everything out.
That covers that aspect. Now, your other points should be used to pump up 1 spell. It's possible you could split points between a spell and the ability that speeds up crystal production. DO NOT try to have multiple spells for this level. You will be running extremely low on crystals for 95% of this level. More than one spell is just wasting skill points. I maxed out my meteor strike as far as it would go.
Now, for the actual fighting. Do what I mentioned with your troops. Fight defensively until the timer runs out. When you can before the timer runs out, use your spell (in my case, meteor strike) on the squid's head.
Once the timer runs out, keep your troops moving between two buildings - the lowermost, leftmost troop spawning building and its uppermost, leftmost counterpart. Only occupy one at a time, and wait to move troops until the fireball is on its way to the building with your troops in it. While they are safely walking between the buildings, keep using your spell to whittle the head down to 0. Keep bouncing your troops around as before.
Once the head is at zero, continue the troop bouncing strategy. But now start targeting the topmost tentacle with your spell. Once that tentacle is at 0, you're ready to make your move.
On your next bounce to the top building after the topmost tentacle is at 0, immediately divert troops over to the topmost, rightmost building and send others immediately bouncing back down as before. Your troops up top will arrive first, so send them at the topmost tentacle. While they move, bounce the troops which should have arrived at the bottom back to the top. When they get there, send another bounce back down for safety purposes, and send others to the topmost rightmost building again. When they get there, send them for the head. Congratulations, you've won.
So essentially three things:
1) Keep moving
2) Soften it up
3) Make a hole and use it
freeking awsome
