Honest Review
I'm giving you an honest review with scores based on flashes in the Top 50. Hopefully you won't feel as if I'm simply trying to tear apart your flash, but leave room for improvement when creating your next flash, taking into consideration the advice that an honest reviewer leaves you.
Graphics/Animation: 3
This was one of the true downfalls of your flash. Your characters, as I understand were to be sprites, weren't very smooth as not only characters themselves, but in their character movements. Flying was just about the only action they actually got themselves into. There were a few fights that had potential to be good, but they simply weren't long enough. You need to spend more time on trying to improve the character movements. It's one of the most important parts of animating, and once you nail that down you'll see how much your score will rise. Another problem I had was the look of the backgrounds. I think you could have spent more time on the backgrounds to make them look like there was a little more effort put into them. The house that they went to looked way too simple, and just had the name written on it with a paintbrush tool. The water looked like a giant blue blob on the screen. If you go the extra mile to animate the water moving and birds flying in the background you'll notice that people will love it. A problem with animators is they never realize how important backgrounds are. Don't get me wrong because your flash did have good points to it, but I'm here to tell you what to improve upon.
Audio: 6
This category of your flash didn't score too badly, but I had a few issues that I wanted to mention to you. Don't use the same music all the way through. It was nice to get the mood going in the beginning, but using the same music all the way through gets bothersome, especially during action sequences. If you have the beginning with the shuttle crashing to earth with that music it's fine, but once you get into the opening fight scene you need to either shut the music off for the fight, or get something fast paced. You changed the music at the end from what it seemed, but it was way too late. Your sound effects weren't bad, but some of them weren't dead on with the actions. The fight sounds are most important, so include as many as you can there. Audio is probably the most important part of a flash, always remember that.
Originality: 2
Your story was something I've seen before, and Dragonball Z on Newgrounds is something I've seen thousands of times. Don't let my review discourage you when it comes to creating stuff like this though. If you're into Dragonball Z then do it! But if you want to make it original you really have to dig deep with your animating skills and ideas to try and create something no one has ever seen before. You need to think of yourself as a reviewer for your own movie and say "I can only get better." Originality is important, and will help you to nail down a much higher score in everything.
Story: 4
Not a solid enough story by any means. This category ties right in with the Originality category because this is where all of the heart comes from in a flash like this. Your ideas need to completely revolve around the originality aspect to score high with the story. A problem when creating a good story is using text bubbles above the characters' heads. Most of the time a viewer can't develop a relationship with the characters when there is text to read that is going so fast we don't have a chance to read it. Slow it down a bit and you'll be fine. All I have to say here really is make the flash a little longer so a viewer can understand what is going on.
Overall: 3/10
This may seem like a low score, but definitely don't be discouraged. I think you did a good job with this flash, and I see a lot of potential for improvement. You just need to work hard and you'll eventually do great things. All you have to do is listen to your reviewers, and thats the most important thing you can ever do for improvement. Good luck!
