Reviews for "Waterlollies"

Ahh, where to begin . . .

Waterlollies is the visually appealing piece that I have seen on NewGrounds. Actually, I had to view it on Youtube, because it is just ridiculously processor heavy. And congratulations on the Tank Award. Bitey is truly an iconic character here. There is really nothing I can say about this piece that hasn't already been said.

The quality of your animation now surpasses that of not only any other NewGrounder, but any animator I have ever seen. After browsing through your favorites in YouTube I have come to the conclusion that it is your love of seeing things in extremely slow motion (1000 fps) that spawns your ability to detail every movement so carefully and correctly. You are truly the finest and most meticulous animator I have ever seen.

I have looked at your older projects and have seen the quality of the animation improve steadily and continuously. The detail with which you draw grass is a wonder to behold.

Unfortunately, your storytelling has not been improving. It is not even stagnant, but falling. I hesitate to insult your abilities in any way, but I dare say that your plots have never been good. Your earliest works were based off of stories passed to you from your father, and your YouTube channel is loaded with pieces that I would call "bytesize", and are mostly clever twists on everyday occurrences. Meanwhile the entire Brackenwood series, while beautiful, focuses entirely on Bitey's childish shenanigans and the rest of the community's often childish reactions. Your characters never undergo development, never have anything new revealed about them, and never really DO anything, it's just everyday living. Sitcom.

You say in the author comments for "Bitey of Brackenwood" that "Flash online is the perfect medium for any storyteller to reach a global audience". While this may be true, you don't seem to have much story to put out there. Ironically, you stated this at the start of the Brackenwood series, which is where I saw your storytelling take it's sudden dip. The Hitchhiker series was far more interesting, and it's a shame you never continued it. The Hobo had a past, and far more personality than any Brackenwood resident. I would have liked to see where he and the boy ended up. Though little is known about where they are headed, I can think of a few places they could end up. CAN ANYONE READING THIS imagine what could happen to Bitey tomorrow? Probably more of the same shenanigans that he engaged in today.

By no means do I dislike your work. On the contrary, I LOVE IT! But I hate to see potential wasted, and there is so much waste here. If you are going to stay in Brackenwood, then I hope some EVENT takes place, that stirs the otherwise stagnant community there, or you could continue the Hitchhiker series. Even though it is your fathers story, you could make it your own, and alter it or build upon it. Or you could just start an entirely new series, with a PLOT, that can and eventually will be RESOLVED. Do you have something against resolution? None of your works have ever had one. They aren't even open-ended, they are just . . . discontinued.

Anyway, sorry about the obscenely low score. With over 4k reviews though, it won't effect the average at all. But if I gave this the 9 stars that it deserves it would just become lost in the sea of useless positive reviews, and I worked hard on this review. It took a whole 2 hours of research and planning.

In closing, I know that I will SEE great things from you in the future, but I sincerely hope that the characters you choose will be more interesting, and will have something to do, and somewhere to go. Because I know how you hate stagnation.

Good luck on breaking into film, BTW. :)

Okay, I'm being serious this time

Your graphics are the only thing great about this. Obviously all of these 10's are for the graphics, because there's no plot. Just random creatures with a cocky main creature always getting in trouble. Yeah, that's original. If there was actually funny stuff happening that would help your score (From me) too, but since no one talks and it's just one guy getting beaten it's not funny.

animation isn't everything

I hate how in a lot of todays games and movies people focus almost all their effort into graphics and special effects and no effort at all into storyline and concept.

I would rather watch a horribly animated video with a great story line and concept than a video with great animation and no storyline whatsoever. this is just a guy running and jumping around for several minues. nothing else

it frezes a gazillion times
