Pile of the Great Esper

The previous post was well made except well, not everybody thinks the way Rise of the Gekos thinks. You certainly made some good suggestions. I think the movie was well done despite some of the things the previous poster said.

Just because some joke isn't funny, it doesn't mean the whole film is bad. I also had no idea Zell was a noob (Edgar from FFIII should have been the pimp). I think the jokes are user-interpretation and many people will believe the jokes are good (look at the rating). In the end, this is better then most of the stuff on Newgrounds.

I really like the Monty Python style of the creaters in this. I also like the planning that went involved in this. Even if the authers if this flash didn't use Microsoft Paint for absolutely everything, it must have taken more hours then I spend on work and school in a week. I also really liked the Final Fantasy sound in this.
On a final note, I would not have reviewed this if not for reading a review that was worth reading.

Pretty Pile of Poo

This .swf was a lot like a really, really pleasent looking pile of doodoo. At a glance, the visuals look pretty, sure. But upon even the slightest further inspection, a totally undesirable product exposes itself.

I'll start with the good. The illustrations were good. End of good.

But the bad was tremendous. Now, I can't blame you guys too much for the terrible voice acting, but that doesn't make it any less of a negative point. Blargh, I'd rather have just read the text.

Which leads me to my next point. I really wouldn't have rather read the text. The scripting was pale and bland, cut and dry, boring stuff. It was beyond boring. It made me want to puke just sitting through it. Oh, look! Zell is acting like a n00b! Ha ha ha ha ha! Oh, Auron just called himself a pimp! Bwahahahahaha! Look, Wakka's a scaredy-cat! Really, my sides are just bursting with boring, staged, unenthusiastic laughter. The Krypton joke during the Super Nova attack was about the only fresh humor in this entire flash. The rest of it was just plain comedic suicide, and even though the "bad guy stopping to cough in the middle of his maniacal laugh" is a good joke in and of itself, it's far from an even modestly original idea. You don't get any points for that joke because it's so blatantly overdone.

And the animation. Boo on you for tweening body movement animations in a movie. In an interactive flash game, I could understand tweening limb motions (and even then it comes out looking like crap), but there's no excuse for that crap in a flash movie. There's a lot you can tween to make it look natural, and complex movements in a sword fight, walking animations, and other complex actions, are not among them. Frame-by-frame those animations because tweening will never make them look convincing in the least.

Your interpretation of the characters is really, REALLY bad. You turned Sephiroth into a clone of Vegeta's personality, gave Cloud, Vincent, and Squall the same boring "cool but cold guy" personality, you gave Zell and Wakka NO credit and they don't remind me of their characters AT ALL, and Quistis was the only female in the cast who even got any air time, and even she was only used for plot recap and explanation. All in all, the characters' personalities look like they were warped to suit the likings of some crazed fanboy. Very unprofessional reproduction of established, well-known characters.

Finally, it was just too fucking short. I know it's a minor point to make, but come on. That lasted about 3 minutes at the most, and too much of that time in itself was made up of akward pauses. There was about as much actual plot material in this as in a single episode of DBZ, though thankfully without taking up nearly as much time. Nobody was saying or doing anything important anyway, so you may as well have at least gotten the ball rolling a bit better.

Good illustrations, the rest is crap. Sorry for the harsh review. I know this stuff takes a long time to put together, but you really should have planned it out way better before getting to work.

Toonimated responds:

I love answering dumb reviews! I really do! First off, tweening, flash's base of animation is tweening mostly if you draw by mouse, if I had a drawing tablet I would make many thing frame by frame. point one written
Humor, woah, you are really grown up, really stiff, nothing can make you laugh, bla bla.point 2 done
Here's one of my favorites: the characters, ok, you didn't like how the personalities came to show, well, 5-7's flash, 5-7's point of view, if we wanted to make a tribute, we'd write Final Fantasy tribute, therefore each character would do as Squaresoft wished for it to be. But, it isn't the case! It's a parody!
Now this one really rules, you felt the animation was about 3 minutes, YOU MUST HAVE BEEN REALLY ENTERTAINED! don't lie! you enjoyed it for it was actually a bit more of 8 minutes!!! If it were boring you'd have felt it eternal! so don't feel bad, we know you enjoyed it ;)
Yours Truly,
5-7

Alright by me

First off, the buttons in the beginning pissed me off. It was hard to select them and they were slow animations.
The drawings, for being mouse drawn, were very nicely done. And the sound was done pretty well, thoug I do agree that "fuck" wasn't really fitting with FF characters.
My main little peeve with this movie is you animated Supernova wrong. Supernova is when the comet-thing travels through space and hits the sun, and from there the sun explodes, causing damage. It is not just the comet hitting the earth.
Well I'm a FF dork for knowing anyway, so whatever.
Nice work.

Good work!

Good job! Not much of an FF fan, but obviously a lot of work went into this, and it paid off.

bazarre!

A well drawn and animated movie with a good and humorous story. The multiple well drawn backgrounds and well drawn characters make the movie interesting through the entire thing. The story had many humourous parts. The bit with zombie Ash was cool.
I liked the extra guide you put in there. Making it more interactive for a movie. The scene selection and quality control buttons added to interactivity as well.
The violence level was about right for an FF movie.
Overall, nice style developing here, and great drawing skills. I hope you keep at it and I look forward to seeing more stuff by you.
