IMPORTANT: Boss fight is bugged and he'll be unkillable if you take damage during the fight. Play the latest version for the bugfix: https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/868828

Welcome to Pouchie's game! He's excited to play the game and have fun. This game demo features one full level with coins to collect, enemies to squash, and a building to reach in order to end the game. All game assets are custom made as a call-back to classic platformer games, while also keeping a black and white aesthetic, which matches Pouchie's theme (pronounced P-oo-ch-ee), as he was originally inspired by the old Black and White cartoons, popularized by Fleischer Studios and that other one.

Hopefully you enjoy this small project of mine!

What's new:

  • NEW MOB! Jerry's a fast little mouse who chases Pouchie around. He runs very fast, but doesn't always know how to slow down. Hard to jump on most of the time, best to lure him to a cliff when possible.

  • MOB UPDATE! Bootstrappers have been given a new sprite! Fits better with the rest of the mobs.

  • BOSS UPDATE! Boomer has a new sprite! Still a meanie as always.

  • MOVING PLATFORMS! What's a platformer game without moving platforms? Make sure you time those jumps!

  • SPIKES! Spikes will sometimes be placed in areas in the game. Careful, they're sharp!

  • TOUCH BUTTONS! Are you playing on mobile? You too can join in on the fun! If you're not however, you can turn off the Touch screen buttons in the Options Menu.

  • OPTIONS MENU! Added to the Main Menu, you can toggle fullscreen, as well as touch screen buttons.

  • PAUSE MENU! Need to pause the game? Now you can! Hit escape on PC, or the start buttons of various devices.

  • NEW LEVELS! There's now Levels 3 and 5. Level 4 is being skipped at the moment because my friend who's working on the level isn't finished yet. Level 3 introduces players to Jerry, while level 5 is a moving platforms level.

  • NEW ITEM! Lucky Fish will increase your lives by one. How lucky!

Bugfixes:

  • Did some changes to the wall jump, hopefully making them a bit easier to achieve.

  • Pouchie's collision has been given a box for his feet. This should help him avoid slipping off platforms too easily.

  • Bobo's collision shapes have been updated. Should hopefully fix the issue where you get hit even though you're above him.

Known issues:

  • There was feedback in the previous builds that gameplay was "too floaty" and "too robotic." I don't know if any of my changes have resolved this issue, but we'll see.

  • Bobo's design is too similar to the old version of Pidgey from Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green. These textures are placeholders until I can design something more original.

Hello, you probably remember me. I made some "funny" comments on your previous game alphas on my old account i have since abandoned. I wanted to apologize for my behavior, i was trying to impress some very toxic people in my life.

So, here is my serious and legit opinion on this game.

First off, nice and simple opening, i like it. my only issues with the start is the lack of music at the title screen, it is in the rest of the game so it surprised me there was no title song: and dragging pouchie down the trail took me a minute to realize i had to press enter after moving to each. maybe some text in the corner to alert the player to "press and hold the arrow key, then press enter"? I had my girlfriend play and she says the same thing.
Next, ive noticed an improvement from the last alphas, the jumping was a lot better and i didnt have as hard of a time staying on the platform. and it was a lot easier getting to the secret coin level. and the enemies were really well done, they were a threat to my progress so i had more of a need to jump on/around them. i really liked the boomer fight too, good job. my girlfriend and i both had a nice time playing, even had some good laughs. still needs a bit more work, but you got the ball in the court here :)
overall, a fun little game with an old cartoon twist. 3.5/5 from me and my girlfriend

ThatElfNerd responds:

Thank you for your apology and honest review. So when it comes to the lack of music in the main menu, it's literally an issue where I haven't been able to create a satisfying jingle that I want as Pouchie's main theme. Even the music in the first few levels, I want to change, as I'm borrowing it from the public domain, and I don't feel it fits, but I didn't want to leave the levels without music, so I bit the bullet and put something in.

When it comes to level selection navigation, I hadn't thought of adding in a UI, because I assumed people have played games like Super Mario World, and could use their instincts. I will take that into consideration in the next build. I will admit that the coding for the level hub is very much experimental, and I would like to have Pouchie just automatically go from level to level, but nobody's done a proper tutorial on how to do it the way I want it done, so I've had to do some creative thinking. I'm hoping to overhaul it in the future if I can figure out a better way of doing it.

I will take the points you've raised into consideration. And I also want to thank you for sticking through it. This is the first full game I've ever worked on, outside of a tiny Flash project I made back in 2012, so I appreciate you sticking through my growing pains.

I also want to apologize for not responding to your comment right away. I unfortunately don't use Newgrounds as much as I should. I wish you good luck on future endeavors.

it's pretty good.
