I dont mean to be rude but does anyone know roughly when the next update is ? Last was 25th of december so im thinking or rather hoping that maybe its going to be next week, which would be rather swell because thats when i plan on getting 10k posts.

The first 2005 pentalist update has arrived (and only because of Denvish's 1.2 update to his NG Grabber program, I thank him very much for his listsaving work). This very well may be, however, the last update of the list--in the form that we now experience it, at least. More on this at the base of the list notes... List history: The list began in late November 2003 (as the title suggests) as a list of people with exp, b/p, and/or post counts above 10,000. In early 2004 it expanded to include reviews though no one had reached 10,000 reviews yet. Finally, that QuadList format switched to the current PentaList format in August 2004: b/p was split into blams and saves separately. Ever since then, this has been a list of people with exp, blam, save, post, and/or review counts above 10,000.

Two of 32 original bumped people have rejoined the list (meaning 14 are back overall and 18 remain off the list). Welcome back after half a year off the list, bmxgamer and SPG. I wish it hadn't taken so long. There are also six new additions: welcome to barbar_jinx, N2x, NahgasSlave, EKRegulus, Sakurazukamori, and SCD. Now, I need to make an important clarification before anyone goes "HUH?" So... LISTEN UP! (ahem)... The three who've hit 10,000 exp and the two who've hit 10,000 blams are legit additions. barbar, N2x, Nahgas, EKR, and Sakura are over 10k in exp or blams now. But I've fudged on the other three. Let me explain my logic on this: if this turns out to be the last update of the pentalist as it is now, I want them to be on it for at least this one last update. I had to kick bmx and SPG off THIS list, when it was the QuadList, after July, half a year ago. For half a year they've been moving up in blams towards 10k, but in that entire time they've been well over 10k b/p combined. They're at 9968 and 9978 right now, and according to Dogma's EGRL update, they're both moving up with slow but steady rates and both should be over 10k this month. I may be fudging, and it may be inaccurate, but I don't feel comfortable possibly stranding two former members of this list in limbo forever more if this does end up being the last update. Meanwhile, in the land of postcount: SCD is 2 posts from 10,000, and I went into his posts and found the reason he's waiting: the 14th is his NG account's birthday and he wants to hit 10k on that day. More power to him, but I'm not going to further delay the list until then on Saturday. I'm in the mood to do it now and I have the time to do it now (woke up at like 3 AM, couldn't sleep anymore), so it's happening now. So I hope he doesn't consider it a spoiler or an anticlimax type thing, but... in two days, it will be accurate, and that's that. There were two guys at 9999 posts as well, but I have decided not to fudge them. One is sirevil, and he's been at 9999 since November, when he made his last post in his post history. I have NO idea when he'll make another post. Hypocrite aka BananaBreadMuffin is also at 9999, and he got there 5 days ago. But again, I don't know when he'll post again. Neither of them left hints of that in their posts like SCD did in his, so I'm not going to bump them. Besides, I don't think either is an avid reader of this list, so I doubt either cares one way or the other. So there we go. I hope that explains my logic in all of this. If I didn't draw the line somewhere (like with the two people at 9999 posts for the reasons I'm not putting them on right now), then I'd let my emotions guilt me into adding other people. Like say my friends James and Pure, both of which are approaching 10k (James in the 9700s in blams and Pure's in the 9600s in posts). And also, Joe! Joe's nearing 10k posts, he's above 9900... but should I fudge him up? Well, he's already doublelisted and is a triplelist fudge necessary? See, this is all a gray area, but... if I start to just add/bump up people left and right like that, there's no point at all in having minimum requirements. I think the 3 fudge-jobs/exceptions I've made for this update make sense and... well there ya go. I just hope I didn't piss anyone off.

A couple of doublelistings to mention: XwaynecoltX finally got himself to 10k blams, so he's now boldfaced. MPA, aka the blam machine, has finally gotten to 10k saves, so HE'S boldfaced as well. And these two boldfacings, BTW, mean that the entire top 19 is now boldfaced. Top 20 WOULD be if only chaotic1 hadn't slowed down in his save rate so much, or if poxpower had managed to post just 21 more times. Ah well.

Now let me speak about what I've been hinting at throughout the list notes, especially at the very top and in the course of explaining my fudgings. Basically, I've been informed that our profiles are likely to soon experience massive changes. The "favourite flash movies" change to "favourite flash content" and the review linkage move from the number part to the text part... are but small examples. SK's Lister will obviously remain incapable of dealing with these changes without some recoding, and I'm not sure that the profile's final form will be ABLE to be pulled. And even if it were, I've also been informed that the massive amounts of data pulling that the NG Lister is generating, even among the few people who are able to use it, is taxing the system because it requires individual page pulls (of each person's profile HTML file)... and that NG may be adding new OFFICIAL lists to the site soon. I hope that this will mean, finally, an actual top 50 VP list alongside the top 50 exp and top 50 b/p lists, where it truly belongs. And perhaps also VP ranking in our profiles, as I have been adding into my screenshots artificially for over a year now. Obviously, the VP list is going to be rendered obsolete, as some other lists will be as well. That, and the simple database queries official NG lists depend upon for their data... versus the drain caused by NG Lister or similar programs... means NG improvement. So we should all be happy about that. Now, obviously, the pentalist isn't going to become an official NG list, no matter WHAT lists end up coming about. But I'm not sure I could ever quit lists cold turkey. So, I would like to continue this list as my final and only NG list... but since I won't be using a program to create it any more, I'm not willing to update it the way it is now manually, time and time again. This list will probably be further whittled down by me adding two simple requirement: A) you must have 10,000 in TWO of the 5 stat categories. B) you must notify me that YOU (or that someone else, I suppose) have reached 10,000 in a second stat to be added, as I won't be doing much manual searching (and I won't be able to automatically check and recheck hundreds and hundreds of profiles ever again) for new additions unless I happen to know that someone's poised on the edge of 2 10,000 stats because I've seen their posts in other threads talking about it or something. This will obviously make the list even more elite, but that's kinda the way it started out. A list that features less than 50 people (29 people currently) is easy enough to do manually, and that's what such requirements would result in. Perhaps eventually it would have to be further narrowed down to 3 10,000 stats, but we'll see. Obviously, this new form of the pentalist wouldn't really have as much appeal to as many people, but it would still be something interesting to make, and give me something to do, and it would be an enduring symbol of true stat-dedication that would be easy to update manually by looking at the appropriate profiles, whatever their new form or layout is. So we'll see how things go. Some things to think about, if nothing else. I hate being the bearer of bad news yet again, but... there you have it. And now you know why this may be the last update of the list the way it is now. Now, if these anticipated changes end up taking longer than expected, and January goes by without the changes and everything remains as it is today, yes, I will update the list like this again, most likely. But I'm just preparing for the "end of times" as it were, and wanted to prepare you all as well. With that said, I end this insanely long ramble. Well, not ALL updates. Dogma did hers (and I did most of mine) without assistance from SK's program or Denvish's program. This list is just too much of a pain to do manually, the way it is now, compared to the VP list. So I did the VP list. Plus, I like to do the VP list every Saturday. And I haven't missed a SINGLE Saturday since I started doing it weekly in August.

Whereas the pentalist isn't so regular, so no big deal delaying it a bit. In any event, thanks for replying to SCD (only 3 minutes after his post, nice and quick!) with some answers for his questions while I was away-from-topic, I appreciate it.

Well I have no idea what they are planning to do. If they post a top 50 vp list, I can see why you may stop doing one.
That, and the simple database queries official NG lists depend upon for their data... versus the drain caused by NG Lister or similar programs... means NG improvement. So we should all be happy about that.

Frankly, I'd rather than they made something like mine, ramagi's, and the TL (500-1k listed per page), so that you could simply pull up a sheet with a list of names, profile links, and current (or "at recalc") totals. Obviously, paces, gains, and the like wouldn't be listed. SK or Denvish could probably re-write their programs fairly easily to pull things like totals from those pages, reducing page loads from thousands to a handful, if there was an interest in things like the B list continuing, but beyond that there wouldn't be a need for the lists.

I hope that this will mean, finally, an actual top 50 VP list alongside the top 50 exp and top 50 b/p lists, where it truly belongs.

Well, like I said, the solution is for NG to run the lists instead of us with SK or Denvish's programs. We'll see when this happens, or even IF it happens, but I wanted to warn people that it's in the planning stages, since liljim didn't say not to say anything about it or anything.

No, of course you don't need to stop the exp list for now. liljim, I'm sure, will tell us when, if it happens, to stop using the programs. And hell, even after that, if you want to do some sort of exp list, like say top 100 with commentary and analysis, you could do it manually, without the programs.

As for the official lists... well, that's just it. Basically, the way it was phrased... the expansion of the lists would be to an extent that the NGTL isn't necessary any more.

To me, that screams "more than top 50s" How much more? We'll see. No, I doubt liljim is going to make the server spew out lists every single morning that go down to 200 exp and 100 b/p and 2.00 VP, no...

but it sounds to me like he and Tom and Wade and Tim, all the admins... have had a conversation about this and have decided that it'd be easier for everyone, and easier on the site itself, to try to take the burden off the list updaters AND off the database and provide the NG populace with the lists they want. Or something closer to them than is now provided with just the top 50 exp and top 50 b/p lists, at least.

Well, that's kinda what Denvish was getting at, I suppose. I'm not sure if any of the admins has thought of that or is interested in doing that. I don't think facilitating unofficial listmakers is a priority, but if anyone wants to mention it to any of them, feel free of course.

that's really the single thing... I've been waiting for... for like 1.5 years now. When I hit refresh on my profile one day and see "VP Rank: #19 out of 660,000 users"... I think tears are going to spring to my eyes.

For a list to be truly complete, after all, it would have to be updated every time a new signup to NG happened, on the fly, not just at 4:35 AM every morning... I don't think that would be an improvement for the servers over SK's twice-weekly huge data pulls. #;-}>

We'll see. Based upon the current top 50 exp and b/p lists, gain and averages aren't really a part of official NG lists... but this will be a brave new world we're entering, and I suppose anything is possible. I asked if the profile changes were going to be all done by the end of January, BTW, and liljim said they were planned to happen around that soon, but plans often change, and delays happen... so I'm just saying this so that people don't start to say "oh, gfox was crazy... he was lying about everything" if our profiles are identical to the way they are today come Valentine's Day or something. I'm just relaying what I know to be in the planning... we shall see! We shall all indeed see. A lot of it, BTW, might have to do with Stamper's designs and whether everything is ready visually, not so much the technical underpinnings and coding part...
