What issues? i just hated all Mario games i played. The Original, Super Paper Mario, Strikers charged, Doctor Mario, Super Mario Bros. (dunno which ones, and Mario kart 64/wii/DS. were all shit or terrible. I don't see how he's so famous.

Super Mario Bros was the grandfather of platforming games and set the standard of what to expect
Super Mario Bros 3 took platforming to another level with way better graphics, secrets (the first game had them too, but 3 definitely did a better job), and really unique levels like Big Island.
Super Mario World once again redefined what to expect out of a platforming game. Unique boss fights, new powers, new elements put into the game like climbing on the walls and riding Yoshi.
Super Mario 64 changed everything with introducing a three dimensional world. Really now, if you were my age when Super Mario 64 came out and it didn't totally fucking blow your mind and amaze you, then you must not care that much for video games. I first saw and played Super Mario 64 on a kiosk and Sears, and there was the biggest line I've ever seen for a kiosk waiting to play.
Not enjoying them is one thing, but saying they're not innovative is another. Mario has always shown us what people should expect from a game's sequel. In a time where games just keep pumping out more and more sequels, I think we've lost what to expect from them. Look at GRAW 2 or Rainbow Six Vegas 2. They are both sad excuses for a sequel.
If the first console you played was the PS2 or Xbox you probably won't get the full appreciation of old Mario games. But when you grew up with it, it's something totally different, and I don't think anyone my age who loves video games is going to say they didn't enjoy Super Mario when they were kids.
