I have my senior thesis every Monday. Basically I go in for a crappy artist lecture, then get critiques on my work in progress. In general the critiques are interesting, but ultimately forgettable and useless sadly.

Today however I received the hardest question I have ever gotten before as an artist.

I was asked "What do you want people to say or feel after they leave looking at your work."

Typically I can bullshit an answer, or fudge my way around lame artsy fartsy questions because I don't really put any specific meaning into my work, I do it because its something I think of that I like and want to see it down on paper, that's ultimately it. Whatever the viewer comes away with meaning wise is fine with me, its part of the appeal of my work to me, the ambiguity.

However after being asked this question I was completely stumped. I had always relied on the viewer to make their own reaction and interpretation, and while my prof said that was fine and all I still needed to have a set goal of what an overall general reaction to the work should be. Because whether or not I consciously apply a meaning or feeling to the work, one is there, its unavoidable, and its up to me as an artist to be able to figure out what the general sensibility of the piece is, especially in my own work.

So I guess I can pose the same question to you guys, in general, what would you want people to say after seeing your work in an ideal setting (besides "its good" or "I like it/ want to buy it")? I still dont have an answer for mine.

Christ that's hard.
I'm kind've prerfer doing/faving character arts and scenes, and my mickey mouse answer is that I aim to get the character's personality and emotion straight through to the viewer, and that they know how to feel.

I've never put politics and drawing together, butI guess if handledt in an abstract way I guess you get richer ideas for interesting illustrations.

I can describe what I want people to say in one word - "wow". Now, that wow doesn't necessarily have to mean "wow, this work is amazing" or "wow, this work is shit", but I want my work to stand out. I like to create pieces not to oblige others' wishes, but rather to fill my own. I draw for myself, and I draw what I like, so I want the viewer to see what I saw or feel what I felt when I was making this piece. My pieces are based off of random bits of thought floating inside my head, when someone sees something that I've created, I want it so that they can see what goes on in my mind. So, back to "wow". I want that "wow" to mean it's something completely different than what they're used to seeing. Sure the art may not be the best, but as long as it can convey meaning, then I'm happy with what I've done, and happy that the viewer can appreciate it.

I hope that was a good enough answer?

Thats fine and dandy and all, but im stuck in the position where my art work will potentially be what i make a living off of. So 'drawing for myself' is sorta throwing any chance of a future away sadly. In a commissioned piece naturally it will be whatever the purchaser wants it to be, those arent my concern, but in trying to market my own stuff is where this question floored me.

Well then, you want to make a piece that pops, that draws the user in, interests them. Again, the quality of the piece is not the issue then (although a lovely piece is added bonus), but the message of the piece needs to entice the viewer. Many popular pieces of artwork became popular because of their deeper meaning and I'm not talking about this bullshit modern art where it's a blue square and you make up some shit like "oh it represents society's lack of individualism".

Yes, but chopping down the scouting tree and rebuilding it from the ground up is kind of a big deal, that, along with choosing who scouts you should help keep the portal much more managable from the administrative end and solve a lot of headaches of people getting unscouted on the user end.

I am overdue to get one up on Mr Toast. He still hasn't even thanked me for introducing him to this wonderful forum :(

I'm actually quite saddened that Renaenae is giving up her modship. It's fair to say she (and the other art forum mods) definitly helped this forum develop into the community it is now.

What Im wondering is how this "choosing who gets to scout you" works... af course, the scoutee will just get a pm, but what about the scouter... will he have the old limit of two (possible) scouts a day? And will other poeple be able to "scout" an artist after he has been scouted by someone else (without replying to the mail yet)?
I really dont have that much problems with the whole "cutting down the tree" business... Sure it can be a nuisance, but I think it keeps the portal fresh. Good artists will be rescouted anyways....

From what I know it works like this.
Scouter clicks "scout person"
That person is sent a PM
If they accept they are scouted, if they deny, or pick someone else, the scouter gets the chance to scout another person.

So basically if the limit is 2, you can send 2 requests, and as long as they are pending you reached your limit for the day. This means that it IS theoretically possible to have many pending scout requests.

Lets say you want to scout BiffBiffwell and BobBobson, you send them a request, they dont respond, you will have reached your limit for that day. the next day however you will be able to make an attempt at 2 others, even though you have 2 pending from the day before. If they deny the request a few days later that DOES NOT give you an extra scout at that point.

Again I'm not 100% sure, but this is how I think its going to work based on what ive seen and heard and been told.

Not to take away from the awesomeness that the new art portal is sure to be but I have somewhat of a personal dilemma that I'm looking for advise on and since its art related and y'all are tight posting it here.

Okay so recently I started getting offers for work as an artist. Its just small stuff like logos and album covers for local bands as well as some posters for some local non-profits. I'm not foolish and I know I can't do everything at once so I'm only working on 1 thing at a time but even then I feel slightly overwhelmed since I've never had to do artwork on a deadline or with having to worry if someone thinks they're getting they're moneys worth or not. I'm worryed that all this stress and pressure will make me stop loving art.

What should I do?

Well, I`d say you have two options:
1> You think your artwork is good enough for someone to pay for it.
Keep in mind that poeple have seen some of your other work and liked that. they are willing to pay for the quality of work you have to offer. dont worry about that. do your thing (dont accept deadlines you cant make, if you can make them> be sure to make them)
2> You dont think your artwork is good enough....
Keep practicing your art.

I wanted to say more about this, but Ive got band practice in a minute...

based on score... if your art picture has the highest votes for that day... its 1st place for that day.... like in the flash portal... then... if its 2nd spot for the total week... it gets 2nd for total... however... if it pops back into top spot and then the month is over... it gets a nice 1st for that whole month... front page awards are most likey choosen by admins / mods... but im not 100% sure about it.. but yeah... is basicly the same as the flash portal... :3

When people do get scouted remember to decide who scouts you carefully and consider who you send your requests to as well.
