They might look alright as jpegs, but when they're converted to gifs (which, ultimately, all icons are), they don't look so good. Not in all cases, but in most.

This seems VERY familar, the whole icon thing does, oh yeah it reminds me of the race to 200 votes for each submission thing. Unfortunately this will never come to an end beacuse there is always new submissions, and even if the list becomes empty it will start to fill again. We might also have people obseesing over icons which might be bad. So Tom the only way to "put an end to icon-less entries once and for all!" would be to require new submissions to have an cion, and then tackle the un iconed ones.
