Disrespectful bastards.

Okay, so I went to a really big Muay Thai show yesterday, cost me £20 and I witnessed some FANTASTIC action from some excellent fighters. It was a great night, blah blah blah - but now I have a rant to make.

The show's main focus were the full thai international matches between the top England and Australian fighters. Now, they are all great fighters, full of pride, heart and passion. What I found disgraceful though was when the Aussies came to fight, they were actually booed and chanted at. This actually really did piss me off...

Who the fuck do the boo-ers think they are? Why didn't they get in and fight the Aussies? They'd have been battered for sure. As far as I'm concerned, the Australians flew thousands of miles, and trained really hard to fight our fighters. Not only this, but they came with respect and dignity... it is a huge letdown to get this sort of behaviour, in MuayThai especially which to be honest always has had a sense of humility and humbleness about it.

As far as I'm concerned, people like this shouldn't come to events. The lager-lout yobs should spend their time doing something more productive, like banging their skulls against rocks or something. Wankers.

I guess its just national pride.

That always happens when you are the visitor...Same has happened to me when I go to fight to other countries...

Uh... no.

No-one takes pride by booing and acting like complete and total letdowns to the human race. Muay Thai especially is an extreme devestating fighting sport - but more importantly, it is still a way of life in which fighters are expected to show sportsmanship. It's not the WWE - you are not in there to give your opponent brain damage and fuck them up - you're in there to win, yes you may hurt them in the process but at the end of the day, it's a sport. A game. A competative event.

It's not a war. You can be supportive and proud of "your own" and still show respect for the opposition. I actually lost my voice and can't speak today, through the intensity of my shouting for the people I wanted to win (of course I cheered the English on against the Aussies, too if I liked them) - but even so, if an Australian competitor did something commendable I at least clapped. Whether they won or lost, I stood up, clapped, showed my appreciation.

Even when one of our guys won in a 2nd round Knockout against an Australian, me and my friends, and co-trainers, all cheered for the Australian to commend him for the effort and heart he showed despite being caught out. That's how you act... supporters are there to do exactly that - support the sport. Not ruin it.

Yeah I know, I've never fought abroad but my brother has - and very often he's been the guy who's been booed. Well, every fight abroad he's had, he's won. That soon shuts the crowd up.

All because it happens, it shouldn't do... I mean, if I were a fighter I'd deal with it and move on. But as a spectator, you kind of realise it's impact more since you witness their attitudes throughout the entire length of the show.

That's just the way some Brits are, disrespectful and 'yobbish' at times. Brits in general do not have a great reputation with other countries. Anyway, the booing and hostility was probably hightened by the rivalry that does exist between Britain and Australia, especially in rugby.

Response to Disrespectful bastards. Nov 29, 2004

This reminds me of a time when some fags booed a 7 year old girl at a talent show. Some guy went over to them, and they got into a huge fight.

Silly people.

The reality is, people will always boo visiting supporters and sportsmen, its all part of the sport be it Thai boxing, football, tennis or even cricket (yes cricket, fucking weirdo's), theres nothing much people can do about it, except ignore it. Atleast it wasnt racist chanting that we see all to often in other sports.

Tut tut, SCD, remember the huge-scaled argument we had based on a light-hearted comment I quipped such a long time ago? ;)

But on a serious note, yeah I agree - you do have to just grin and bare it... but sometimes it really does just piss me off. Anyway, that's my 4 post quota so I won't be posting for the good part of half an hour...

Precisely - it won't have helped that England took a beating from Australia this weekend at Twickenham.

As long as you leave all the hostility and resentment at the arena, it shouldn't really be that big of a deal.

Yes but what does that have to do with anything ?

Yup, im pretty sure it winds most people up and that in turn just makes it worse, you shout "shut the fuck up" and they will just reply with "fucking make me poofy boy", its not that, i have no doubts you prolly could, but not all of them :)

Beating ? Well...
You should've seen France's match against New Zealand.
Damn did they kicked our asses HARD in rugby.
Such a dishonor, I guess. Everyone was talking about it at school, about how we were beaten as if we were some 12 year old players or something.
I mean, how is that possible ? Our team is composed of human beings, like New Zealand's. We work hard and train like them, our men are strong like theirs, yet, we got beat like dog shit. That was a harsh defeat, man ! :)
But I don't care much about rugby, I'm more into soccer.

Anyway, it wasn't as harsh as Japan's defeat 98-0 against Wales...

France have never exactly been consistent. They lost to Argentina last week, heardly encouraging before a game with the All Blacks.

T'was a joke to be honest. Japan are just another of the many 'whipping boys' in international rugby.

Booing is just as important as Cheering.

Think of the Soviet Heavy Weight in Rocky entering the arena with pity cheers.

Or when Tarver took Roy Jones Jr. down if people golf clapped.

Usually I'm smart enough to totally agree - but in a thai fight, 99.5% of supporters are decent and good people, who don't act like nobs. The rest are concentrated yobs, usually in one region of the stadium or arena, whatever... and in reality, if trouble did kick off, they'd be up against thousands of fighters, trainers, ex-fighters, ex-trainers and anyone with any knowledge of the sport... and with that number AND style of people, you'd think they'd be intimidated into acting like pratts.

However 99.5% of people at any show are also civilized people, and hence even though this is the case, trouble rarely flares up no matter what those idiots say. It's just disappointing.

God forbid anyone cheer their team on in a way that offends you, it's not like the other team would get boo'ed if they went to austrailia.

His point is that part of the fun of sports is making heros out of your favorites and bad guys out of the opponent.

Response to Disrespectful bastards. Nov 29, 2004

It is disrepectful and I can understand jokingly boo or something. Do they think that the other team hasn't worked hard and doesn't deserve to be there? I'm sure they do and those guys are jerkzys

In that case, it's okay to beat up the opposing team when they come over by that logic? Where exactly does that argument stop? When is it not okay to make "bad guys" of the opponent?

I do agree to an extent, which is exactly WHY I went to an England Vs Australia event... competition between 2 friendly rival countries, can only be a good thing if used in moderation with respect. Yeah, I'm rooting for one country - but I always pay the other the respect they deserve.

And don't forget, in Muay Thai, you're figthing ONE guy, not the entire country. One guy, skin and bone, who has put hours of effort into training, has heart, determination, passion to succeed, and is probably no different than the guy he's fighting. I don't think it's right to show such distaste... is it really that hard to merely applaud them when they deserve it? Or at least just say nothing...

yeh Brits can be rude douche bags, when I was in London a few weeks ago we visited Kensington Palace with my five year old brother, he wanted an audio set and the women said no, then she asked if he was 5, we said yes, and she reluctantly gave it to him. We were walking away and then she yelled "OOH MISS!" to my mom, my mom turns around and the lady yelled to her, in her snobby British accent I might add, "Be sure the little one doesnt misplace it or damage it" I yelled back "Oh thanks, we were going to have him break it and then we planned on hiding it somewhere in the palace." I said it with a dead serious look on my face and the British lady who works there looked outraged. Anyways, I got in a lot of trouble from my mom for saying it, but it just goes to show, British people can be snobby rude people.
