Sad news today, I’ve gotten word that Felix Wiesner (@Wiesi and @Wiesi-Mausland) has passed.

Wiesi is best known around here for the legendary games he made, here’s a few:

Something I really appreciated about Wiesi was that he would drop in on the forums over the years and reply to my news posts. Anyone who has been on NG long-term knows we went through some tough years after the combined impact of the YouTube migration, the Death of Flash and rise of mobile games and apps. Seeing Wiesi in the replies was always a bright spot for me and motivation to keep going. It’s upsetting to think I won’t be seeing him anymore but also a reminder of how a small reply can go a long way in helping people feel seen.

This past year, Felix shared an unfinished game and art made with alcohol markers. He also continued to make encouraging posts, cheering on other artists and ongoing progress with Flash emulation. I wish I could have one more chance to thank Felix for all his positive contributions to NG.

I’ve updated the In Memoriam page and made a long-overdue Sharks series page.

I'm gonna tell myself this is Felix right now:

If you have some favorite Wiesi memories, feel welcome to share them here!

R.I.P our beloved Wiesi.

Wiesi, in heaven if you ever read this, you made the best games and I love them, especially Miami Shark. So sad to see a tragedy about it.

God I could fucking cry he had such a unique and charming style and I've been playing his games my entire life and loved every single one. I'm only glad I had the opportunity to tell him how much his games mean to me (in a review of Duck Spray) and how amazing they all were. They left an indelible mark on my mind of raw, pure fun. I wouldn't have kept coming back to Aggressive Alping Skiing for over 10 years if I hadn't. I will never forget the permanent mark of that particular artistry he left behind, and I only hope in that way, Wiesi and Mausland lives on. I certainly won't forget. His reactions to my reviews are something I will cherish.

This one...

This one hurts

Wiesi was one of my biggest inspirations growing up. One of the first artists I knew by name, even. And to add to that, he left so many reviews on my works growing up, making him one of the most accessible people around.

I... I just wish I could've verbalized that to him before he passed. He's one of the people I so very much wish I could've met irl. An incredible genius who pushed the Flash style to its absolute limits. His games were incredibly fun insanity. I only wish to now capture a fragment of what he was able to accomplish.

I'll miss you, Wiesi. Thank you for being an amazing part of my childhood.

Rest in peace.

I can't really add much else. But it does sound like that he's been a beacon of light to the community. Plus the shark games were awesome.

Response to Wiesi, 1977-2023 2023-11-16 17:18:36

The chaotic destruction of the Shark games entertained many on this site, myself included. It might just be me, but you don't usually see that many well-known game developers on NG who happen to also be BBS regulars. Regardless, I'm gonna miss seeing his black and yellow pfp showing up.

Rest in peace, legend.

This is terrible and sad news. You described this so accurately. Hard to find better words.

Frank's Adventure is one of those wild rides that embody the early NG so well. Back in those days, nowhere else and by nobody else could a game like this have had a chance to become this popular.

Response to Wiesi, 1977-2023 2023-11-16 17:27:22

That's was awful. Because Castle Cat is one of the flash games that i enjoyed as a kid and probably the first flash that i genuinely enjoyed. It's really sad that he no longer with us. I hope he will be in a better place somewhere in the afterlife. Rest in piece, comrade. You will be missed.

Response to Wiesi, 1977-2023 2023-11-16 17:31:15

This really sucks. He was such a staple of NG. His games and art practically defined an era on the site. He was always so incredibly positive and encouraging, that you sometimes forget he probably could've used the same in return. He was family here, and I regret not ever telling him so.

Creating is usually a very isolating and lonely process.

If you have a favorite artist, take a minute to review their stuff or leave a comment appreciating their work on their user page. Appreciating what they do, could mean the world to them.

Aw man I hope he went peacefully, wish nothing but the best for those around him.

I really enjoyed the shark games over 10 years ago and sure have revisited them a few times over this decade haha. I remember seeing his icon pop up on reviews of random stuff and on post replies, I truly apreciated that, it was something that reminded me a few times how there are some active users here with some real history.

Response to Wiesi, 1977-2023 2023-11-16 17:40:50

My heart dropped when I saw this.

Wiesi developed some of the earliest flash games I ever played, ones that I would still go back to even today. I would wait till my family were out of the house and blast Power Fox or Miami Shark and let the overactive hype nature of it all take me. It was even better cause the family computer was not made to handle it I guess, so I remembered a lot of these games in particular moving way way slower than intended, something I wouldn't even notice till later in life.

Mausland has always stuck with me, when I come across a reminder of any of his games, I immediately want to play it again. I don't think that's gonna change.

Go in peace.

I was JUST thinking about him today. Had a laugh over some dumbass thing I sent him earlier this year, literally our only interaction. Also said it was good to see him back working on the classic painting recreations and whatnot he was doing at the time (glad I included that part along with the aforementioned shitpost in hindsight).

I used to comment on his art pieces almost a year ago when he was in his alcohol marker art phase. Truly saddening and shocking to find out that I was talking to a deceased man with hopes and dreams left gone but not forgotten...
