Granted, I've never actually participated in it so much as I did passively observe it, but yeah. Seeing a prominent member lose their shit and go on a tirade calling the fandom wiki staff pedophiles was some real crazy shit.

Edit: wait this was in the video games forum uhhhh ignore this

i dunno, the one with sans in it ):

richard milhous nixon looks as if he were a funked lyndon b johnson but not

Gotta agree with you on the Splatoon community.

The most insane that I have seen is the FNF modding community. They leak and cancel other modders and mods just because they can.

Look at him spin

not a game, but it's definitely eddsworld fandom lol

seconding the fnf modding community. it’s simultaneously a huge comfort and anti-comfort for me lmao, ive loved it since i was 13 and i have lots of good memories associated with it, but at the same time, it’s incredibly toxic and somebody gets cancelled every other week (im not even exaggerating there. there was a point in time where i kept count, and every week there would be new drama & a new creator cancelled)

there were also large creators in that community that i formed parasocial relationships with, and they ended up being awful people (amoraltra & stickybm. iykyk) so while that was definitely not a good experience, it was a learning moment to not form parasocial relationships with grown men on the internet who don’t even know you exist. lmao

im also not sure if animal jam counts, but that game was my SHIT when i was younger. like, i shit you not, i considered myself not a human, but an animal within the world that the game takes place. i genuinely deluded myself into believing i was a fucking wolf on animal jam. that was fun

Wasn't part of it, but the Danganronpa community. I said it in another thread, but there are people there that will straight up doxx you if you don't like a certain character or if you ship two characters that they don't agree with. I seriously pity anyone that's still part of that fandom.

As someone who was kinda part of it from 2016~2021 or so I've heard about this before. I was lucky (or rather I was probably just unpopular enough) to not be on the receiving end of doxxing or anything. Even so, hearing stuff like this is the reason I'm too afraid to talk about certain things on the internet. I don't really interact with the series at all anymore except for drawing a character or two from the series occasionally.

FNF I stopped following when there was so many mods it was too hard to keep track of all of them. All the controversies with mod devs that arose didn't really help either.

Visual Novels and Rhythm games aren't even my thing lol.

Yeah it feel like nowadays you have to be extremely careful with certain communities. And it doesn't matter what community you're apart of, you doxx someone, you're done. And there is no saving you from that.

And while I haven't played FNF much myself, I am aware of the controversy surrounding it with predators and mods, etc. It's very sick.

The Hollow Knight community has recently gone collectively mad waiting for Silksong.

Failing over and over doesn't make you a failure. The only failures are the ones who don't try.

Actually this. The fandom can often be an insufferable mess, and yet I'm still there because of my friends and my AU i didn't finish.

I haven't seen a single sane Nintendo community to be frank.

The only gaming community I consider myself to have truly *been in* was LittleBigPlanet. And booooooy oh boy. It was an experience

  • First there were the clout chasers. The people who are so obsessed with upvotes that they'll harass you for leaving a neutral review, (and that was before the devs got rid of the downvote feature). More often than not they'd just reupload some survival score attack level or copy someone's item showcase template and make as few tweaks to it as possible. They'd make fakeout giveaway levels promising to give away some rare costume or item after X amount of likes and views. They'd never deliver but people would continue to fall for it.

  • Next of course there were the kids. Occasionally those little zoomers made something heartwarmingly fun but more often than not it was just like an empty room with nothing but a sponge with a mouth that spews gibberish

  • You also have the people who got it when it was free on PSN+ or as an apology for that time when the network was down for like a month. They could be seen begging people to help them use the exploit to get the DLC items for free.

  • Can't forget the clans. Emos, scene kids, furries, steampunks, ninjas... Homestuck was picking up steam around the time LBP was falling off but I remember seeing some unhinged Homolust trash on LBP for sure. I never understood the point of there being clans in a game with a max of four players per session, but it worked somehow.

  • The rarest of the bunch were the artists. There were tons but two genuinely talented creators I still remember were Steve_Big_Guns and Jump_Button. I think SBG went on to actually help with the creation of LBP DLC or even Dreams content but I could be misremembering. Last I checked, Jump_Button was working on a pixel art game but I haven't heard from either of them since the 2010s so if anyone knows what they're up to these days hit me up about it because I loved those guys.

  • There was also the content police. They cared waaay too much about the quality of content that made it on frontpage and would make worthless rant stages begging you to play their levels instead which were often not very good either.

  • And finally you have the shitposters. Their autism may have been self-diagnosed but they were just as mentally ill as they come. Some of them went on to be my friends outside of LBP. At least until they got into those rarted fashy neo-religions.

I started off as a content cop aspiring to be an artist. I got disillusioned from seeing so much garbage on the front page. But once I pulled the stick out of my ass I'd give up my dreams of becoming a renowned LBP level editor and would instead join the ranks of shitposter. That said, LBPVita was chill as hell. Probably because of the much more niche userbase. Either way I made a handful of good friends from the shitposting side of LBP. Anyone here know HorseFolder? He was an LBP guy at first.

I beta tested both LBP Karting and the PS3 version of LBP3, and the amount of people telling everyone to quit whining about the bugs because it's still in beta, would make you want to pull your hair out. Both games were glitchy messes on release and it's probably because of all the apologists in the beta swooping in to downplay the severity of every bug that got discovered.

The PS3 servers would eventually have to be shut down after hackers discovered that it ran on an unsecured network and ran some exploits to... engage in mild acts of buffonery... tomfoolery... hooliganery... erm, chicanery, even...

Which is a huge shame because the PS4 version of LBP3 is missing a criminal amount of content compared to the PS3 version. Truly sucks to suck. I sometimes wonder if LBP3 was kneecapped on purpose in order to not overshadow the ambitious spiritual successor to LittleBigPlanet, called Dreams, but Sony likes to pretend that game doesn't exist either so who the fuck knows.

i could talk about the wealth of fandom drama and terminally online behaviour i witnessed from the 2013-17 voltron/fire emblem/homestuck communities but in all honesty i dont think anything will top being into smash bros only to find out just how many players in the competitive scene, big ones even, were taking advantage of minors, just some disgusting shit that made my waning interest die out almost completely

The Sonic.EXE community

i'm still in the EXE community because i like the content and characters, heck, there is some cool people there too. I'm not gonna let a terrible community ruin my enjoyment of something I like, BUT...

I hate or at the very least STRONGLY dislike a good bit of the community, they pretty much ruin everything and can't even go a literal week without some new drama or someone being exposed, even more so than the FNF community

i do stinky art on the internet hahaha

Oh you sweet summer children, were you ever in the Homestuck fandom at peak popularity? I was once on tumblr in the early days and ended up being mass cancelled by the the roleplay part of the fandom over on it.

Story tw: dub/non con mention, Eating Disorder sexualisation mention

So when I was 14 - 19 years old I used to RP as some Homestuck characters, which was a huge thing over on Tumblr, e.g people would make blogs writing as that character and others would reblog and respond like their character. I thought this was a great way to meet new people and mostly to get better at writing.

Well, a sub-group in the RP community at the time had made a sex slave RP alternate universe, they were recruiting for RPers to join the 'universe'. Where in said universe the HS canon kids were to be enslaved and entrusted into the guardians care (like the human kids had Bro Strider, Dad Egbert, etc and the troll kids had people like the condesce and GHB etc). The kids and troll kids who were 13 in canon would be passed around weekly on a slave rotation ring where they would proceed to be sexually abused by whoever 'owned' them that week.

Due to me being absolutely disgusted by this when I found out, I wrote a post saying that it's vile and those who associate with these kinds of people are enabling them. It kind of backfired on me, as when I posted that it turned out 90% of the people I had interacted with were also creepy weirdos also partaking in the AU on the downlow and it created a massive target on my back, keep in mind my age at the time.

Unfortunately for me they would begin to harass me across platforms, I have one person in particular who was very popular in the HS fandom stalk my blogs, going to the point of staking out whoever I interacted with and trying to quickly befriend them so I was left without any friends.

During the time I was still there after that, I tried my best to keep calling it out, just to bring awareness to new comers, nobody else was doing it. I found out they had created sexual fetish blogs sexualising eating disorders as well, it got to the point where this group of sickos were accusing me of being a cult leader, because I had friends who had experienced eating disorders also educating how harmful fetishization of ED's was.

Whoever was new in the community I tried my best to steer them away from the people I knew were vile, I didn't want them to have the same experience I did because it really wasn't good for my mental health to be told that rping incest and rape was just 'a means of people expressing themselves' and that promoting eating disorders was 'body positivity'. A lot of the new comers to the RP side of HS fandom were similar ages to the protagonists so this fanbase has always had a younger audience due to the young age of the protags, and it had become an incredibly dangerous place to enjoy it with as I had experienced.

One situation was awful, one of the newcomers ended up being baited into unfriending me and going with that group of people. As soon as they were baited, the people who mass cancelled me then began slowly ghosting them. This group of people were not only disgusting but using people, who were also teenagers as pawns to spy on another teenager. That person later re-added me just to say they were given promises of having fun RP's but ended up being ghosted and being told to spy on me, I wished them the best as I wasn't sure if they were still in contact with the others.

As time went on they still stalked me, I had friends block me out of nowhere and it turned out to be their doing. Like I said before these people had massive followers in the HS fandom and they still do. So many people blindly worship them because of their contributions to the fandom and it pains me because I know how disgusting they truly are. These people would sexualise eating disorders, stalk and mentally abuse young fans for their sickening means of spying.

These people are in a lot of power in the fandom, they can choose who participate in fan events and run a lot of things which help creators in the fandom gain an audience. When I was a growing artist and were on good terms with them they even tried to slyly imply that they could get me noticed. Well, a few years later and I'm not recognised as a big artist, my art doesn't even reach 500 followers but I like to think I kept my dignity, even if it meant losing out.
