Newgrounds represents an important opportunity to remind everyday people that creativity is accessible and achievable. That you don't need to be one person in a famous studio of hundreds to make a game or animation for other people to enjoy. You don't have to be a seasoned legend in order to make art or music. Newgrounds is the platform to upload creations of your imagination with peers, and if you need help doing it, you just might find it in the community.

It's what made me get an account in the first place, in 2003. When I realized, it hit me that all of these cartoons that I've been enjoying on this site were made practically single-handedly by kids my age. THEY made these things, by themselves, and maybe I could too.

I had ideas of stuff I wanted to make, but I assumed it was far too complicated to get done until years later, and that was a fallacy rooted in fear and inexperience. Turns out, just trying to make anything was the experience I needed. That was the practice. And Newgrounds was the platform to entertain with my practice. If I made one person laugh for every hour spent on the thing I was making, then it was worth it.

If it weren't for Newgrounds, I wouldn't have ever gotten my job at Explosm working for Cyanide & Happiness. Once again, I wrongfully (ignorantly) assumed that a professional career in animation was also far too complicated and years away. I was working a job that I despised in Garland, TX when a classmate (and fellow Newgrounder) told me that C&H were hiring and I needed to get a reel together.

At first, I declined. I didn't think I could make the cut, I didn't think I was that good of an animator, and I was mopey and depressed and anxiety and self-doubt gripped me at that time (along with rampant alcoholism), and thank fuck my buddy was like "NO DUDE, SERIOUSLY, GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND APPLY" ...I still didn't have a reel, and I didn't have much to cobble together into a reel at that point. I just had Doom and Dick Neck really. But I sent them a link to my newgrounds animation profile, and Dick Neck made them laugh. It got me an interview and audition material, and I wanted to get the fuck out of my old job so bad, and really nail the fuck out of this opportunity so hard, I knocked it out of the park.

Newgrounds did that. It's possible to make the thing that you're dreaming of. It's worth it. And even if you notice every flaw, seen and unseen by the masses, you're probably overthinking it. Because you are your own worst critic.

This is a site that is unashamed, and unabashed with welcoming arms. If we stick to it, this community could prosper again in years to come. I'm loyal to NG, and I believe in a potential greater than it, as a website and a concept, has ever experienced in its history has yet to come. There are peaks for this place that are still ahead. If this place can be flexible for the next big change, it'll be really important for inspiring others to create even more.
