WELCOME TO MY #MESSYPAINTS2022 PAINTING CHALLENGE!

Allow me to introduce my monthly painting challenge, MessyPaints2022! Here's how it works! 

I will post a subject poll on my Twitter (@DoctorGrambo) at the start of each month that people will vote on. The winner of that poll will be our painting subject for that month. The subjects will start out as pop culture, anime or game characters, but will slowly become more varied and difficult as the year goes on. Once the subject is decided, anyone participating will paint the subject, using ANY PAINTING METHOD THEY WANT (digital or traditional, the only rule is that YOU MUST PAINT IT), and then post their work to Twitter, Newgrounds or Instagram with the hashtag #MessyPaints2022. You can post it anytime during the month, just make sure you finish it before the next month and that the art has the hashtag. Rinse and repeat until 2023 so we get to see all the progress everyone has made with their painting skills!

I'll also be doing Twitch streams at least once a month where I scroll through the hashtag to see how everyone is doing. Maybe I'll even shares tips and videos that I use for help. I want this to be an educational community challenge where we all help each other to improve our skills and even get a few portfolio pieces out of it! I would prefer only these two. OCs are cool and all, but sticking to the subjects will help keep the challenge focused. Plus, painting 2 characters is already a lot of work XP

THE APRIL POLL IS NOW LIVE ON MY TWITTER!

This month, we're doin a LIGHT SOURCE CHALLENGE, where you're voting more so on the light source than the character! The poll closes at midnight on April 1 (That's no joke), so VOTE NOW! There are refs for the light sources in the comments of the poll.

ALSO, in regards to the Batman characters being used as subjects, you guys can paint ANY version of the winning character, as long as the LIGHT SOURCE is correct!

You guys can paint any version of Catwoman you like; Michelle Pfieffer's and Burton's take, the new one with Zoe Kravitz, the Arkham games' version, hell they could do Halle Berry's if they REALLY wanted to. The only rule is that she MUST be painted and lit from the side, either left or right. So try to really push your light and make the cat POP! GOOD LUCK!

Though I'm not quite sure if it qualifies as a painting, as there is linework there. You might want to clarify what you see as painting.

Hello hello! This Catwoman’s a great start, but could definitely be pushed more! This video here is a great jumping point, for both technique and the different mindset we’re lookin to instill with the challenge! Hope that helpful!

If anyone wants to practice their lighting or have an extra reference for it, there's a cool as heck tool here! You can rotate the head and change both the main and secondary lighting as you need. I don't know if there's a female equivalent.

Hand drawn is my style. As I'm not good with painting.

Oh trust me, I'm no good at painting either! The idea of the challenge is get us to step out of our comfort zone and try something different! If you're lookin for a bit of help to get started, check out these Youtube channels, Sinix Design and Paint Coach!

Painted traditionally or it can also be painted digitally?

EITHER ONE! I've been doing all digital so far (which may be subject to change), but as long as the final piece is painted, the method does not matter! I'd love to see what you come up with!!!

HELLO HELLO EVERYONE! It's that time of the month again, for another MessyPaints2022 subject poll! This time we're doing METAL MAY! The idea came to me as I was struggling with the rubber texture on Catwoman this month, so now EVERYONE gets to suffer with me in texture hell! Concentrate on painting that sweet crisp metal texture for whichever shiny subject ends up winning! The poll is now up on my Twitter so GO VOTE NOW!
