Can you like... lock this now, so it won't get "OMG WHEN WILL IT BE DOWN I HOPE IT'S NOT DOWN FOR LONG" posts for the next 5 days.

The point is... Don't lose your dinosaur.

At 7/14/04 06:09 PM, Kouga-kun wrote: Exactly what is being upgraded?

We are purchasing six new webservers, a load balancer, a switch, and a new fileserver (to serve as a second fileserver). The site is basically going to be split into two clusters... One of them will solely host the site (html files, images) with its own fileserver and webservers, while the other will solely host the Flash (.swf) files with its own fileserver and webservers.

The load balancer will make sure everything runs to maximum capacity, and users don't connect to dead servers when they crash.

We can't make .swf file downloads lightning fast, because if they were lightning fast, our bandwidth usage would be through the roof. We can, however, make the rest of the site run lightning fast, no matter how many people are downloading .swf files. At least, that is the plan. Everything should improve in general, though.

So, does this mean, for me, it's already done? Because it's 6:47 right now, but over where you guys are it's like 9:47. Okay, nevermind, then.

The upgrade hasn't happened yet, the downtime tonight was just preparation for it. But anywho... there's a massive upgrade at NG every 3 or 4 months, man. This isn't "THE" massive upgrade. O_o

Sounds like a pretty nifty idea. As long as flash loads CONSISTENTLY and in a stable manner, I don't think people will mind the files not coming through at max speed. Everything else (BBS, portal listing, reviews, profiles, etc.) loading fast will be more than enough reward for a slight speed limit on swf speed. I can't wait!

Uh, yeah... that'd be why some guy said "it's over!" and why the posts (and reviews... and movie uploads... and etc. etc.) all stopped between 6:30 and 9:30 NG time.

Just look at the times on the page, it doesn't matter where you are on the planet, the times say NG time:

Boom, there ya go. Your calculations were correct, if unnecessary.

That video of the Dad n Me game looks fantastic. It's incredibly violent and I can't wait to play it. I guess Alien Hominid production is wearing down somewhat...b/c from the video, it looks like a lot of work has been put in to create this new game.

Response to Downtime for Upgrades 2004-07-14 22:43:51

Well, I certaintly remember Newgrounds usually going down anyway at 5 AM, but if it's for large upgrades, I am all for it. Hopefully we will see a large improvement to Newgrounds, ofcourse, in true reality fashion; We have to wait. Oh cruel fate.

We need to re-organize the server layout to prepare for a MASSIVE HARDWARE UPGRADE that will be taking place later this summer. It will be the biggest hardware upgrade in the history of NG! It isn't happening tonight, though, so don't expect any improvements just yet.

Dan made a teaser video of our new game, "Dad 'n Me" - check it out!

YES!!!!"MASSIVE HARDWARE UPGRADE"!!!!
I downloaded the video,but I can't open it...?
anyways, i don't need the video, the game is coming out soon, right?when is the full version of A.H. coming out?

Nice to hear about the upgrade.

But that trailer won't work for me, I even tried both Windows Media Player & DivX Player.
Ohwell.

Response to Downtime for Upgrades 2004-07-15 00:17:59

new hardware upgrades, do u mean like making the the site run faster?

Response to Downtime for Upgrades 2004-07-15 00:32:05

You know you're hooked when you hit the refresh button for about 30 minutes solid. That's what I did tonight whilst the site was down.

I make me sad.

the game looks bitchin!

I really like the depth of field and how the characters interact with the vehicles and stuff...

when is the game coming to NG?

Response to Downtime for Upgrades 2004-07-15 02:16:20

I can't view the movie either, I just hear the sound. Like someone else said earlier, it says there was an error downloading a codec. Does anyone know how to fix that?

Response to Downtime for Upgrades 2004-07-15 02:18:21

Come on ppl, how do u work the video? The sounds r pretty cool and by reading the previous posts, it sounds pretty kick ass. Can't wait.

P.S: Where's Pico2?

Response to Downtime for Upgrades 2004-07-15 02:28:47
