"Pimp My Classic" February COTM! 2018-02-04 18:40:52

It's that time again! - This thread is for WIP and idea sharing!

THEME: PIMP MY CLASSIC
Recreate a well known classical painting (from at least 150+ years ago), reinterpreted as a modern ‘pimped-out’ artwork, including references, styling and as much popular and cool stuff as possible! The newly pimped-out image must be re-imagined as being from a post 80’s era, up to either modern day – it cannot be set in a time earlier than the 80’s, or later than today.

DEADLINE:
February 21st 2018

Submissions will be judged on the following:

1 – Technical execution and quality of the art

2 – Creativity and originality of the piece

3 – Ambition of the artwork

HOW TO ENTER:
Upload your finished artwork to the Newgrounds.com Art Portal

TO ENTER THE OPEN CATEGORY:
TAG your artwork with the word ‘PIMPMYCLASSIC’
(That’s it! Scouted or unscouted, I will find your entry,
as long as you tag it with the exact word above)

TO ENTER THE BEGINNER CATEGORY:
TAG your artwork with the word ‘B-PIMPMYCLASSIC’

OPTIONAL: Share your entry on social media using the Hashtag #PIMPMYCLASSIC

This is a worldwide competition – join the Arty Party, wherever you are, and whatever age you may be!

RULES:
– You may submit a maximum of 1 entry
– You may NOT enter both categories (open/beginner)
- Include a link in the description of your final submission, which leads to the original classical painting your piece is based on
– You MUST include a link in the description of your final submission leading to a ‘mid-development’ source (image or video) showing the entry is your original creation, but DO NOT tag more than one piece of art on newgrounds (only tag your final entry, not any work in progress entry) or you WILL be disqualified
– No pornographic material of any kind, violence must be PG13 and not too gruesome
– Your piece MUST be tagged correctly and be submitted by the deadline
– You may not submit a piece using stolen artwork or imagery

This is my current WIP. I do not have a title for it yet. I am painting this on a playomg card with acrylic paint. It is based off of, Glorification of the Eucharist by Ventura Salimbeni.

Thoughts on my WIP sketch? its the last supper but as a superbowl party

This is my "Pimp My Classic" February COTM Beginner WIP. I don't have a title for it yet and this is only the outline for the finished piece.

How strict is the 150 year rule? I kind of want to do something with Starry Night but it's only 129 years old.

It is hopefully not very strict because all the ideas I came up with yet depend on paintings a bit younger. It would be pretty sad to have van Gogh, Cezanne and Escher excluded from the cotm.

This seems like a fun theme, but the problem is: I don't know what's cool these days... And I know even less about anything before these days. Maybe I could do what I think is cool, but I don't think anyone would agree...

Is it important to send the WIP here? Can I put it on YouTube ( like a timelapse ) and link the video in the description of my artwork when I submit it?

I really like the Idea of the Challenge!

I am new to Newgrounds and I hope to inspire some people with my work. I was thinking about participating on other of your challenges but I always was like "Meeh you will never win! You will never be good enough! ...!" and this time I will get rid of those wrong toughts because it´s not about winning. It´s about getting inspired, train your creativity and maybe even inspire some other people. I am stoked and so excited for all the other entires.
This is my work in progress image. I think I will go for the 80's ^^ Not sure what else I will add to this work but I am having a lot of fun with this one.
The original painting is: https://www.hamburger-kunsthalle.de/sammlung-online/caspar-david-friedrich/wanderer-ueber-dem-nebelmeer

Greetings!

You don't have to post here, it's optional

I was wondering the same. I have an idea for American Gothic, it's only 88 years old though.

Argh, the 150 year plus limit is really bothering me, I wish it was 100 years plus, there's so many more options then.
EDIT: Every classic painting I look at is less than 150 years old :(

Well, maybe you could search not so famous... Like "renaissance artist that weren't that famous" then look at their works of art. That gives you both options and dates so you can check if its within 150 years. If you don't want to do renaissance then search other culture's name for that time period and search the same. 😊 I hope I was some help

Thank you for the wise words, I've managed to find a painting that I'm happy to work with, and by a famous painter that was from my local area as well. :)

A 1980s reimagining of honore Daumier's NADAR elevating photography to art. I'm undecided whether this will be done traditionally or digitally yet.

I think the automated system is removing my artwork for Jazza's PIMP MY CLASSIC challenge because it looks like a selfie. It's a re-imaging of The Son of Man. Is there any way I can stop this?

Many thanks

Same thing happened to me, I want to use A Sunday on La Grande Jatte and only just realized it's only 130 some years old :c I sent a message on Jezza's twitter about it so we'll see.

No! Jazza made it very clear that the original painting MUST be 150+ years old.

I am so pleased that nobody has posted an idea similar to mine yet.

I've just been throwing ideas at the wall and this is my favourite thus far. I might add a couple more things, and then I gotta make my sketch and start painting!

An Extremely Cursed Image

My English isn't that great, so I'm a little confused with the meaning of 'pimp'. Jazza mentions 'pop culture'. Does this mean I can add something like... Star Wars or Pokemon, or something like that, to 'pimp it out'?
