Ideas for Man Cave? 2017-10-29 05:40:09

So I found a tiny crawl space under the stairs of my dining hall. It's small enough that I can fit through it but most people couldn't (I have a 27" waist and it's a pretty tight fit.) It's extremely unlikely anyone would go back there - the door to it looks like it opens up to a control panel and it's not even clear from the start that it opens (when I first saw it I thought it would have to be pried open) and furthermore it's in a part of the basement that's no longer used so no one goes down there anyway.

Right now it's filled with dust, cinder blocks, and cobwebs, but I think I might clean it out and put some stuff in there - probably some battery-powered lights, carpet tiles and maybe a bean bag cushion. Size-wise it's not high enough to stand in but pretty comfortable at a crouch.

Anything else you guys would suggest? I'll post pictures later.

Guns. Lots of guns. No wait, something to shield you and your electronics from IR sensors. The police and fire rescue guys are equipped with cameras that can see body heat, even through cinderblocks.

You should definitely try and fit in a few second hand couches/chairs and a TV. Maybe a mini fridge? It's a man cave after all

I don't think there's an outlet in there, sadly. Also even though a mini fridge and couch might fit in the SPACE, the opening to crawl in is definitely not large enough. A bean bag would be ideal because I could squeeze it in bit by bit.

I'm a chick, but personally my "chick cave" is where I keep all my video game collections and merchandise. All of my Fallout stuff is in there.

Place a mattress. Take a homeless person and tell him its his new bed. Feed him scraps from your meals and order him to guard the house at your absence.

Funny you should say that, it's already got bricks, cinder blocks, and tons of dust in it. I got rid of ~85% of the bricks and cinder today but it looks like it would take 5+ hours of continuous work to get all the dust out. There were also protrusions around the opening of the hole which I was able to knock free using a brick, so it's slightly easier to get in and out now. Weirdly enough there were also some beer bottles down there that looked like they were 30+ years old. I wonder if they were tossed back there or if someone was actually down there drinking. In its current state I can't imagine anyone willingly going down there to relax, given that you get filthy crawling around down there and it's pitch black without a head torch.

I also found a critter down there - either a centipede or millipede - which makes me a little concerned. If he's there, there's also got to be some moisture down in that space which means I need to be concerned about mold. Another minor concern is that the floor is not flush (one place near the entrance has a brick that's fused to the floor, most everything else is small though,) which means if I lay down carpet tiles things are still going to be kind of bumpy.

I haven't taken measurements or checked for an outlet yet but given the amount of work that needs to be done just to clean the space these aren't priorities yet. What I can say is that this area would be comfortable for two people and somewhat crowded with four. If you squeezed any more than that in I imagine you would do it to hide from someone. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a bean bag in there but anything else would A) have to fit through the opening and B) be purposeful enough to be worth the (very limited) space I'm working with.

Several problems with this. Bondage equipment is too big to fit, too expensive for me to pay out of pocket, and the dining hall is part of a dorm occupied by mostly freshmen. If I put something in there it would have to be basic, and even then I imagine there would be a horrible risk of someone really getting hurt down there. We're talking about a space that's so small I'm going to be putting foam around the entrance to keep people from getting scraped up - imagine trying to get someone out of that space if they've been injured.

That said if you went down there with a partner and just hogtied them on the floor for some light play it would be the perfect space. Private, quiet, and if you put the proposed bean bag over the entrance the sound insulation would be outstanding.

Just the thought of crawling around naked down there (with someone) really gets me excited.

Can we get pictures of what it looks like from the inside of the room? It literally looks like nothing more than a crawl space, but you make it sound like it opens up into an area that you can stand up in.

I had a man cave down in a basement that had a little bit of moisture. It ended up being terrible. Bugs all the time, moisture, and slowly the growth of mold. We no longer live there, but if it's not dry then it's probably not worth anything more than a panic room.

I tried to get a picture of the interior but it's too dark, even with my head torch. I'll try and get a better picture if I can find a strong enough light source. It basically is a crawl space but it's surprisingly spacious. As-is I imagine it would be the ideal space for reading (or as @Painbringer noted, fucking.) The next time I'm down there I will take some measurements to give you guys a better sense of the dimensions.

I'm at a loss for how moist the area is. The millipede and cobwebs suggest that the area is moist enough to be habitable, but it's not overrun with bugs nor is it moldy as one would expect from a moist space. Honestly the space is so dark and desolate it looks like a crypt. Then again if someone ever found it and left a mess in there I have no doubt that bugs would tear it to shreds.

Just did some measuring. The space is about 9' long and 5' deep, with a 4' ceiling. Beneath the stairs is an additional 6' by 4' space but the ceiling here is slanted due to the stairs. No outlets, either. Still virtually unbeatable in terms of privacy but a bit less appealing after figuring out the dimensions.

So half a jail cell (bottom half) without a bed or plumbing?

My old place (moved in August) had a walk-in closet sized store room with a small, under-the-stairs room attached. It had a locking door, but I always kept it wide open.

No, I did not use it as a sex dungeon.

Basically. I didn't do much cleaning today - pulled out a few bricks and measured the door - it's 16 inches on each side. I'm planning to go back with a Dirt Devil since sweeping took forever.

Someone took a look in there and noted that it was close to the boiler room, which is probably how the critter got in there. We've agreed the area isn't going to stay dry year round so it looks like tile might be a better option than carpet. The issue with that would be the price, as well as the floor not being even enough to lay them down (yet.)

Not enough evidence to suggest people have used it for anything other than storage and drinking. There's a weird metal pole in there too but I haven't pulled that out yet.

No power or ventilation really limits what you can do down there but the space isn't too small, I think it's as big as my first bedsit lol. You could certainly get a laptop, portable chairs and even a thin mattress in there.

Most importantly what are your hobbies?

FYI If the critter has 2 pairs of legs per body segment it's a millipede and if it's 1 pair it's a centipede. The human centipede should have been called the human millipede.

The biggest problem isn't the size of the space but the opening. I also need to check in on it during a flood to see how susceptible the area is. In all probability it'll turn into a place to crash - can't do anything too elaborate.

Side note, I COULD build something bigger than the opening so long as individual pieces will go through.

I only saw it once and it was dark as hell.

Update: I think I'm the first person to enter this space since 1967, when the building was first constructed. I found a can of Hamm's Beer down there labeled "NEW! ALL-ALUMINUM CAN" on the side. Not only has the brewery been closed for decades, but I have not been able to find any images online with the same design on the can so I can only guess this thing is damn old. There's a glass bottle down there that I haven't pulled out, so presumably these are from a transition phase when the brewery had both glass and aluminum cans available.

I think the space is quite small for a proper mancave, but you can fit in a decent-sized TV and couch. But most important, you'll need wall decoration. Vintage stuff, neon lights, y'know, that sort of stuff.

Funny you should mention that. Someone told me there was a crawl space in that same building that led to a maintenance shaft where someone put up a clown poster - guaranteed to freak out anyone who shined their flashlight on it in the dark. I am considering putting up posters but given the limited space I have anything I would want to mount in there would be flat.

Small update - I've cleaned out more of the space and now mostly all that's left is small particulates of debris. After moving ~60lbs of stuff out of there it's starting to look a lot friendlier.

The remaining debris is so fine that I'm not sure I'll be able to get them by sweeping - I'll either have to use a vacuum or a damp rag. I'm a bit less concerned about moisture after finding a piece of wood down there that's gone 50 years without showing the slightest hint of mold or rot but I'll still probably use a moisture absorber or something to keep the area as dry as possible. Even so, if I can sweep/vacuum it up I definitely will - getting anything wet in there is an absolute last resort.

After sweeping everything I'm realizing a huge amount of stuff is flat-out fused to the floor. Actually leveling it or even laying down tile or carpet is beginning to sound extremely unlikely now. I do want to do something to make the floor a little friendlier but at this point my only options would be to try and lay down cement (which I'm really not handy enough to do a good job of) or try and wear down the protrusions, which could be totally impossible.

I've also ordered some battery-powered LED lights that I'll be fixing to the ceiling.Once I have some decent lighting I'll try and snap a picture of the interior.

On a side note, the ceiling is some kind of metal foundation that the stairs were put on top of. If it's magnetic I might try and tile the entire ceiling with refrigerator magnets as decor. This would make the area INFINITELY more attractive as right now it's completely covered in rust. Posters for the walls are also a possibility but this depends on how tough it is to scrape off uneven bits of mortar sticking out between the bricks.
