Hey everyone! The time has come once again for the Challenge of the Month, this time the theme is "Style Swap" - the parameters might seem a little confusing so pay close attention to the explanation I give in the announcement video and you should be clear :)

This thread is for you to share ideas and WIP's!

DEADLINE:
June 25th 2017

THEME:
Recreate a piece where the scene or artwork portrayed (from modern or history art culture) is swapped in style with another iconic and recognizable style/artwork. You may use traditional or digital materials. Entries will be judged on the following parameters:

1 – Quality of art

2 – Originality of the concept

3 – Ambition and effectiveness of a recognizable style swap

HOW TO ENTER:
Upload your finished artwork to the Newgrounds.com Art Portal

TO ENTER THE OPEN CATEGORY:
TAG your artwork with the word ‘STYLESWAP’
(That’s it! Scouted or unscouted, I will find your entry,
as long as you tag it with the exact word above)

TO ENTER THE BEGINNER CATEGORY:
TAG your artwork with the word ‘B-STYLESWAP’

OPTIONAL: Share your entry on social media using the Hashtag #STYLESWAP

This is a worldwide competition – join the Arty Party, wherever you are, and whatever age you may be!

RULES:
– You may submit a maximum of 1 entry
– You may NOT enter both categories (open/beginner)
– You MUST include a link in the description of your final submission leading to a ‘mid-development’ source (image or video) showing the entry is your original creation, but DO NOT tag more than one piece of art on newgrounds (only tag your final entry, not any work in progress entry) or you WILL be disqualified
– No pornographic material of any kind, violence must be PG13 and not too gruesome
– Your piece MUST be tagged correctly and be submitted by the deadline
– You may not submit a piece using stolen artwork or imagery

If I want to draw a cartoon with say the Van Gogh style, do I need to use a scene from the actual show or can I just draw the characters doing something just in the style? (Sorry, if you don't really understand what I mean here, I'm not very good at explaining it :P)

This is how I understood it: Take a Distinct style from a famous painting, animation, game, ect. and apply it to a widely recognizable scene from another scene, area, animation, painting ect.

I think a good example is this. I am sorry if anyone does this.

I am not the definitive answer on this but just my interpretation of what Jazza said. Please PLEASE do not use this as a focus point. Just use it as a lose guide.

I've got some ideas, I just hope they work.
And I wish I could enter the top category to win that tablet and the brushes but I don't have PhotoShop, nor am I very skilled at art, But maybe I will

So sadly I wasn't able to finish my entry for last month so I am gonna try even harder this time!
For the artwork I wanted a Dutch painter or painting cause I am from Holland X3 as for the swapped style... well I might have been watching corpse bride just before Jazza's announcement. Here is what I have so far what do you guys think?

I was thinking of doing the Mona Lisa in LavenderTowne's style.. is she popular enough to count? I hope so because I'm really hyped to do this one.

Love this. Had to get started right away!

Ok i have a couple of ideas for scenes i want to draw but i'm kind of stuck on which i should choose...
here are my options:

- ace's sacrifice to save luffy (one piece)
- uncle iroh's 'leaves from the vine' scene with the view over ba sing sei (the last airbender)
- the scene where ash and his pokemon all cuddle to keep warm in an ice cave (remember that one?)
- naruto and sasuke clash
- naruto ninetails cloak
- tarzan sliding on the branches
- the lion king: simba, timon and pumba in the jungle

Any suggestion on what could work?

I'm really excited! Can't wait to start! But first I need to find some styles to swap...

Response to June COTM: STYLE SWAP! 2017-06-05 13:33:37

OK, so I'm gonna upload my WIP's in chunks as I draw each character. The scene I am doing is from The Lion King when Timon, Pumbaa and Simba cross the bridge and I am doing it in the Francoise Nielly style, hope you like it :D

well i think it might just be to close to the original scene, i do'nt know what your plan is for the rest of the dawing but i would try to be a little bit more daring with poses, envirement, character design, etc.

this is a very recognisable scene so i think you can alter it a lot without it looking to different if that makes sence?

Hey, this is looking really neat so far. I'd advice you to observe the style of the artist you chose better, tho. I didn't know the person, so I went and googled them. They are working traditional and uses very strong colors with visible brushstrokes. Comparing it with your piece, you've smudged the colors together a lot which makes them dull and look dirty. Try to use your digital brush as you would if you had a big canvas and a traditional brush like your artist does. Maybe try to customize yourself a brush that can mimic the traditional look better.
Also observe how they use the color, which they choose and how they make shadow and such visible through them.
Keep it up!

Decided to do a scene from gravity falls in tim burton's style. Im not very good at replicating people's styles but i thought id give it a shot.

i like the colors but did you take the base picture directly from the movie ? cuz i dont want to break it to you but im not sure if that allowed

Response to June COTM: STYLE SWAP! 2017-06-05 16:41:04

i was wondering if the art style included the sading and stuff or just the propotions lines and such so could go wild with light and shading ?

Still rough but having fun.
