In terms of price, reliability, and size, what gun is the best to have in your house for security?

Glocks are durable, reasonably priced and extremely reliable, they're also super low maintenance, which is a plus. I want it as my first gun, I've seen many videos and articles about it though. It's like waiting for a game or movie that won't come out till next year. Dang.

Why not try one of those Fuel Rod Canons from Halo? I once used one but my house messed up. Don't aim directly at the target, just aim at their feet, that should do the trick.

Usually, more expensive firearms are of higher quality and in a home defense situation you'd rather not have you gun jam up on you.

Everyone has a hobby, mine is shooting firearms. Target shooting is just a great way to relax. I'm none of those three things you listed, and I take offense to your stereotyping.

For OP, I would recommend getting a Mossberg tactical or Remington 870 Police and putting 00 buck in it. Pistols are fun but if you've got no experience with them they can be just as dangerous to you as they are to the bad guy. Plus getting a pistol requires a lot of paperwork depending on the state you might not even be issued a Pistol Permit.

I would also appreciate it if you were to get some formal training with the firearm you are using, try finding your local shooting range and ask the Rangemaster if anyone is willing to teach you proper safety and stance.
