nice stuff bro, you need to improve on color, i have the feeling ive said this to you before but you need to start using gradients and shading and read something on google about color theory

Here's my newest animation you guys!
Yotam's Dream
The next one I put out is going to be a thousand times better

Response to Animation Practice!? 2012-02-27 08:42:15

Hello guys.

This is my first animation in months (probably a year), so sorry for this excuse for an animation.
walk
I'll probably clean up this rough in Flash later on.
It was animated on 1s, and it's timed to a 12x beat to give it a natural feeling - every contact pose takes 12 frames to appear. When you open it, in the first time it's kinda slow but then it goes to play at its normal speed (24 fps). I don't know why that happens.

This wasn't done in Flash, btw. I used Pencil to sketch this out and I imported the entire image sequence in Flash later on.

Why not do it all in Flash?

I don't know.
Pencil feels better to animate (for me, at least).

Seemed fluid enough. Looks nice, I like it. How long did it take you to draw it out on paper?

Did you draw the whole cycle out on paper or just the main phases?

Pencil feels better to animate (for me, at least).

It looks like it gives you more of a grip on the animation, I need to try that out.

lol You got me wrong. It's not on paper, it was made on a software called Pencil.
It took me 1 hour or so to make. I made the main poses (contact, recoil, lift, float) and then I just went inbetweening straight ahead.

Whoops, I completely misread that..

Still, that's pretty good, for time.

That happens a lot.
Well I inked it but I'm not happy with it that much. I need to ink more in Flash, my lines in it are terrible.
I'll let the thing explain itself.

I need to animate (and ink) more, I'm very rusty :/

I see what you mean.

Why don't you try doing the lines in a sketchy way and then in a clean way?

With this walk cycle, I think clean lines would help it look nicer and smoother. Not saying that the sketchy look is bad, I guess it's just all up to the animators preferences.

that LOOKS good, nice, you should note there is something very wrong with the hips once the right foot contacts the ground though

Everything's moving at the same pace. Nothing is spaced out or timed correctly and as a result it's giving off this very machinelike constant speed which shouldn't be apparent in a real life walk. The back foot peels off the ground when in fact it should just bend and then push off, which is what would give your character the force to the walk. Without any force, the reason for the walk stops being apparent, and it all looks very weird. As if the character is just hanging there suspended by invisible wires while walking on a treadmill.

Thanks, I'll surely remind myself to slow it more at the top of the arc, I didn't do that and it resulted in a mess.
Damn I keep forgetting these important stuff.

i disagree with fluff about timing but its true you should mind spacing

I accidentally threw the timing thing in there, timing is actually good.

If you squint you can see the movements are actually very fluid and great, its your linework that sucks pretty badly haha. You need to work on consistency of your frames because right now they are jittery and go everywhere. If it helps, try thinking of him like a stickfigure as far as his leg goes, as if you were drawing his legs with a big brush that doesnt change size. That way you can keep the volume the same.

The one problem i have with it is that everything happens too fast. You need more pacing in your storyline to build suspense and intrigue, rather than just jumping from one place to another

Art is mighty fine though. Mighty fine.

I agree, it could be slower, also your drawings are good but your compositions aren't as dramatic as I would like to see. Before you start animating start breaking down your scenes into light and dark and really think about what emotional content you want to convey in your comps.

you are missing half the walk, nice though

the following is optional but even if the nouse whipping LOOKS good, it feels awkward, i mean, that cant be the proper physics behind it and i know animation is not about physics but...just an advise

there's not a bog difference at all, I guess that's why you asked, I'd do 2's to save time

there is a difference, cover one while you watch the other, i like the one on ones better. Has more impact to me

The difference is in timing. He didn't adjust the positions to accommodate the different frame rates so the one animated on 2's looks clunkier/less fluid.

He shouldn't have used the same positions, rather there should have been bigger changes occurring faster when he was using 2's to compensate so it doesn't look as clunky

Good shadow stuff dude! The walking is odd, a lot like yotam perel's style of animating walking where the legs criss cross instead of going in front of one another. It looks really interesting! I bet you'd be great at the experimental animation kinda stuff

I really like the face morphing first one. It's a pretty seamless transition and never took me out of the animation. The last one though, I don't feel like the creature's proportions were consistent, so it kinda took me out of it. All criticism aside, I like it man, it's got a sort of "Adventure Time" flair to it that's becoming popular these days.

This is something I've been working on for the better part of today. I started coloring it, but I don't think I'm going to finish, as I'm not satisfied with how it turned out. I think I need to start using symbols and animating body parts rather that drawing every detail in every frame by hand.
