This might sound totally stupid, but what are the advantages to skate shoes rather than just wearing normal shoes?

Not really.
Bacon goes with everything.
They're more adapted for skateboarding and won't wear out as quick, and will also be much more comfortable while skateboarding.

Skate shoes have better grip than normal shoes and are pretty comfy really
They are comfy. I also like them because they have flatter bottoms and grip the board better. It's just personal prefrence.

From experience they are more comfortable. They look different as well, so maybe people like the design better. They are just shoes... who cares.
I had a pair of skate shoes back in the day.
They're really comfortable; that's the advantage.
There are times I wonder and times I don't; I think you fall into the latter.

They are A LOT better than skating with your regular casual shoes. They grip onto the board better and if you slip off from a fall or something, try to stop yourself with the shoes and they will make this screeching sound that sounds like when a car makes a hard brake. Fucking awesome.

Well, surprisingly enough my feet barely have an arch to them so basketball shoes and the like aren't comfortable anymore. I love the colors and designs skate shoes come in as well, I mean usually basketball shoes or other shoes are really colorful and bright, whereas I have an all-black pair of air speeds and I love them. They're very comfortable, soft, and they fit me perfectly. And, to top it all off, a nice pair of skate shoes are inexpensive and go with any outfit. All I wear is black, and with a black, comfy pair of skate shoes it fits me completely.

Well obviously if you're skating they're going to get you more grip and they'll also be more durable and comfortable for skating in. I also think skate sure tend to look better than most other shoes. I've been wearing nothing but skate shoes (with the exception of boots when I'm doing work or when there's a significant amount of snow on the ground.) for the past 11 years.

The main reason people get them is because they look cool and it is some sort of fad. Or if you actually skate, it makes your more stable on the board.
I used to get nike SB's now I only wear Lebron's or Jordan's. Just wear whats comfortable and cool for you.

They are so god damn comfortable. It's like wearing pillows on my feet.

The comfiest pair of shoes I ever ever owned was some Airwalks in 5th grade. I've since then worn mostly wal-mart shoes but if it helps you they really were the best I'd owned. Not in terms of longevity though..
