That may have been the reason why I enjoyed the game so much. I hadn't played Pikmin in ages and Overlord felt like a great variation of that style.
Of course, before I got my hands on Overlord 2 i'd managed to find and play both Pikmin 1 and 2 so I think the novelty had worn off and I realised that Overlord still didn't really come close in my mind. Still, I think the first game is worth a fair price of maybe £10
If I remember correctly, the second game introduces some strange enemies that seem to cause your minions to not fight which gets very annoying very quickly. Especially when the AI didn't seem to have changed much from the first game.
