Err, dont you know that those types of ads(porn) pay the most and running a website like newgrounds, which chews through a shit load of bandwidth, isn't cheap. Also Inspirion next time dont go off half-cocked, make sure you have all the info first. Seems to be alot more of that hapening on newgrounds lately.

I doubt it'll ever be quite as heavily as trafficked a feature as say reviewing portal movies, but I'm sure some people will donate to their favorite authors, or perhaps buy a present on a wishlist for someone they've been friends with for a long time on the BBS... who knows. There are many applications.

Anyway, I stress again that few people jumped to the conclusion that Inspiron did about your motivations in making optional links to wishlists and donate buttons for authors.

And just look at all the positive responses you've got from authors like Legendary Frog, Narcissus, alienature, Mikethepod, etc. etc. I think they far outweigh one user's silly conspiracy theories and insults. I hope they do for you, at least.

Most pop-up blockers let the window open, then close again. But blockers like the Google Toolbar blocker, tell the browser to ignore the javascript that makes the pop-up. Pop-up blockers that let it open and close again, make it hard to view stuff on the portal, because it closes any thing that pops-up. Google and others, only get rid of the script that creates the automatic pop-up. Therefore, more people will get blockers like google, and the pop-up scheme will create less revenue. (I think that's how it works anyway.) If what i'm saying is right, Tom may eventually have to either add more banners :( , or start charging for Gold Accounts :( , (<hint>or come up with his own, amazingly brilliant idea to create more revenue</hint>).

As poxy said, signing up to porn sites and so forth is where a large bulk of the revenue comes in from, I'm sure, but... there's one more aspect I wanted to add to the conversation. From what I could tell, all you guys were discussing the various pop-up options and which gets NG money and which doesn't, those being:

A) popup prevented from ever opening
B) popup opens but is closed prior to full loading
C) popup is allowed to open completely

Most of you seem to agree that A) doesn't help out NG much, and C) helps it out, and just aren't sure about B)... but, I think that, especially in the aftermath of the .com crash in 2000ish... most net advertising is founded upon "click through" and signups. As pox already mentioned, people who go and sign up at sites being advertised are helping the most...

but it also bears mentioning that just letting popups load and then closing them is probably not helping much, if at all. You have to actually "click through" the popup and let the page it pointed to load for it to truly count. Back in 98 and 99, ads being VIEWED was enough to satisfy companies, but nowadays, people have to GO through to the sites for it to matter anymore, and signups or purchases are even better.

But I'm not positive about that, and I don't know how it all breaks down. I have the google toolbar, but for whatever reason, I'd say it only blocks 50 to 66% of the ads that NG tries to send my way. I see tons of those Napster ones that have been around lately, for instance. But that's cool, because I just like to reduce the amount I get (thanks for voting page is where I get most of mine). I click through on ads maybe once a week to try and help out. I suggest the same for anyone who's feeling guilty about popup blockers, but I also agree with whoever said that 99% of NG users probably see popups, so don't feel too bad.

i agree that that message was posted in ignorance, by someone who has no idea how much it costs to run a site as large as this. several hundred thousand megs of flashes etc. are on this site and SOMEONE has to pay for the hosting. just be glad we dont have to pay to watch flashes. you rule fulps!

Okay, I don't post very often but here we go.

First off, I don't see why Inspiron is so angry, the wish list and donate is TINY TINY text next to an authors name, so it's not like a big eye sore or anything. Second, the only ads that pop up on Newgrounds are basically the plasma screen/super computer contest one, and the free ezines; Both of which if you've been on here for even a week you probably have became adept with closing them practically right as the pop up. Oh yah, there's also like, 2 other tiny ones that don't take up a big portion of the screen, forgot about those. There is NO spyware that changes your home page. That only happens when you use Kazaa (Not the lite version), or go to lots of porn sites. I know this because I have done both. I've NEVER encountered any errors surfing the forums, but like I said, I don't do it much. And for the 'bandwidth' usage problem that Inspiron mentioned, the most you have to do is refresh the page once or twice and it'll load, it's nothing hard or that anyone can't put up with. Basically Inspiron blew everything outta proportion, there are not "ungodly amounts of ads" Just like, 1 or 2 that pop up every once and awhile.

There you have it, my take on it. I didn't check if anyone said any of the same stuff I did, so if they did, my apologies for wasting your time. I mighta forgot something too...who knows...

The pop-up windows don't bother me, and that's because I use netscape. If you hate them so much, use that, and as well, get a spyware hunter for your computer so all the cookies with pop-ups will go away.

Actually, porn ads aren't necessarily the highest paying. They are no doubt one of the most popular because hey, who doesn't like porn. However, the porn ads tend to pay very little per click or per sign up because of the popularity. Now if you could get half the people that click the porn to click on banners for other products, you could make more. I've found some affiliate programs that pay up to 5 times more for banner clicks for "Free Stuff" than they do per porn click. Another bonus to that is you don't have porn ads all over your site that is greatly populated by kids. So maybe next time you should get yourself fully cocked before shooting you're mouth off and having it backfire.

I almost never use the BBS, but I do have a thought on this one.

NEWGROUNDS is not perfect and there are a few things that I don't like (like the virus like browser that I can't seem to get rid of)

HOWEVER, I do know that before I found NEWGROUNDS that I had all of these creative Flash concepts that I didn't even bother to make because there was nobody to see them. NEWGROUNDS has given me an opportunity that I would otherwise never have had.

These other things that were added to the site do not seem to impact me in any way whatsoever, SO WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?

As far as Mr. Fulp making money...well, that is just a stupid comment. This is his full time job and he should expect a full time wage. Besides, what would all of those militant 13 and 15 year olds be doing if they couldn't bash my movies?

THAT'S RIGHT!!! They would be selling smack on the street corner, making some real bank, and would otherwise be a threat to society.

Its a nice idea, just stick them in their user profiles though, NG is starting to get the AOL affect, the more features the more cluttered things get, simple is often better

Here is a thought anything made by a human or any creature is not going to be perfect we all have flaws. Robots creating robots does this but of course who made the robots "man" so even things robots make will be flawed.
