Yeah, this could have been a "get the basic points from a matrix grid" type of thing, but it's so close it does draw quite the suspicion. But there are many people who have put graph-paper grid transparencies over source images and used lightly penciled grids on their destination medium in order to attempt a near exact reproduction. Still, that's pretty damn close. And insisting it was not traced before someone else suggested it makes it suspect. But the possible steps of creation described in this post are the actual origins of the resulting image the creator might foresee someone claiming that he traced it, when in reality it could have been a mix of skill with meticulous comparison.
I don't think it is, not without proof.
