Farewell to Winter

I think that winter is pretty much my favorite season, if only because it is the only time of the year that the sunlight is actually bearable for me. Seriously, the only thing that makes me more dizzy is low atmospheric pressure, and wearing caps makes it even worse, probably because of the heat accumulation, not even counting the fact, that every cap I own or wanted to buy is too small, even after adjusting it loose. Am I a vampire or something?! I guess I have relatively long fangs... For this reason I sometimes wish I lived in Scandinavia, though maybe Canada would be better, cause I don't know any Scandinavian languages, but then it would kinda miss the point, because Canada is at the same latitude as Poland... Anyways, that is why I publish this little farewell.

This project started when I experimented with changing the instruments in Neutron Star. I made a nice synth and came up with an interesting melody, which I then copied into a new project (and that's why they both are in 6/4, though I feel like this song better utilizes its divisibility by both 2 and 3), also salvaging the first pad from that experiment a bit later. In the middle I vocoded the first synth, sampled it and used it as another pad. I also made a weird texture/wind thing too by using noise for amplitude modulation. I kinda feel like this song is badly mixed, I'm not even sure what's exactly wrong, it just sounds too loud for me... Oh, just by the end of composing I first realized what the little box titled "sidechain" in the compressor effect actually does. It activates a sidechain.

Story of the title is quite strange this time. At first I've named it in the same temp-scheme as other songs I planned for my game, but then I thought that it doesn't really fit that game and I realized that this song somewhat reminds me of that one HOI4 mod's soundtrack, so why not get an inspiration from that mod's base material? I messaged my friend and he pictured a town coming back to life, and this is when I came up with the title. It is in fact a translation back to English of the Polish title of that show's one episode (the original title was in English, they translated it loosely to Polish, and I translated somewhat directly the translation). If you were wondering what mod and show am I talking about, the HOI4 mod is somewhat recent (or at least it became well known recently) and also really well made, but the show has been around for 10 years, it's for kids and it's kind of a meme, also because of its fandom. Why am I speaking about everything in this way? Because I am somewhat embarrassed that I'm sharing that I am this familiar with that show, even though it's making everything even more awkward... Nah, let's commit to this, barely anyone's going to read this!

Maybe I should send this to the mod's makers?

I like the pensive mood at the beginning and the echoey drums at :09. Some of the synths are a little cheesy, but they blend well together. Early on, I think the texture could’ve used more low-pitched tones to balance out the frequency range, but that problem solves itself by :53. The piece has a really pleasant drone-like quality, but after a time I think it needs some more prominent melodic content to give it a stronger sense of direction, especially during the first ⅔ or so. The moody breakdown at 1:46 was nice, and you really made good use of the echo effects with that synth at 2:05 or so. The re-entry of the drums was a welcome change, and overall the piece comes together well by the end. The composition is strong overall, but I think you could do more to give it some shape and really maximize the emotional impact of the atmosphere - dynamic contrast, phrasing, and filtering are all good solutions. Besides that, I really enjoyed this one. It’s alternately dreamy and energetic, and the sound design grows on me as the piece goes on. Keep at it, Mik3l24! :)

First, I appreciate that you put some real effort in the description. It meanders a bit here and there, but it does a pretty good job of explaining your thought process.

Second, here's my interpretation: the message of a farewell to winter is subtle, but it's there. some of the synths, specifically in the middle section to me sound very fluid and liquid smooth, if that makes sense.

Here's another example: in the beginning, before the rest of the instrumentation starts to kick in, there isn't a lot in the way of mids, which to me acknowledges winter. As you add instruments that contribute to mids and bass, the piece begins to feel warmer, like acknowledgement of Spring.

I'm not sure how many others will see it my way, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

It's certainly peaceful to listen to.
