I wrote the poem I adapted into this song a few months ago and published it online on February 20th. As for the melody of the first half, it came into my head and the urge to record made me wake up early this morning. The second half uses the tunes from four public domain songs, having each pair of lines using one melody before going on to the next. Hava Nagila, America the Beautiful, Korobeiniki, and Frère Jacques are all public domain, so I am not sure how I would list the rights to this piece. The country or culture of origin of each piece adds to the symbolism of the lines. I guess I should also note I was watching an episode of the History Channel show Modern Marvels that is relevant to the topic last night. I guess I can't use this in a video game, as that specific case Korobeiniki belongs to The Tetris Company. I did not mention the subject matter by name, but the details I give in the lyrics are more than enough to figure out what I am talking about.
Lyrics:
The copper queen of the city harbor has broken shackles at her feet.
A fact that's not apparent to all the people that you meet.
We all can clearly see her seven pointed crown
Guiding torch, tablet, and long flowing gown.
But upon a pedestal over twenty seven meters high
The only way to view her chains is from the sky.
Perhaps it was how the nation that gifted her forgave
A nation that let a person be kept by another as his slave.
The copper queen of the city harbor has broken shackles at her feet.
A fact that's not apparent to all the people, to all the people that you meet
We all can clearly see her seven pointed crown
Guiding torch, tablet, and long flowing gown.
But upon a pedestal over twenty seven meters high
The only way to view her chains is from the sky.
Perhaps it was how the nation that gifted her forgave
A nation that let a person be kept by another as his slave.
As his slave.
