Back in 2007 I wrote a song on guitar and vocals, called "Turn Back Time". This song has been through many iterations and from one form to another, I've also performed this song live a couple of times using a piano and singing along to it. I've attempted to remake a few times in the past couple of months and not being able to get the vocals to sound even remotely good, so I ended up scrapping the project until I got access to another male singer which would be able to sing this and to have the right amount of soul. This afternoon, I was doing a bit of free style singing and I started singing parts of this song, but in a slightly different key, with different timing and overall in a much lower vocal tone.
I laid down some piano and strings and a basic drum beat, and recorded a few sections. Being overly happy with the result I continued and built up and reinforced the song with some more technical drumming and brass, string and synth sounds. I used Xpand! and Kontakt 5, Namely the later for the strings, brass and one piano (the other piano sound came from Xpand!). I played around with various amounts of Autotune and settled on a very light tune on a complimentary sub channel, this gave it a slight harmony effect. I then recorded over most of song, with a higher pitch vocal, and with a bit of chorus and reverb, I bounced it down to a seperate channel, which was going to make it easier to effectively mix at the end of the production.
I total I spent about half an hour on the composition, half an hour arranging it and about half an hour mixing the finished piece. The most amount of time was wasted mainly on recording about eight takes of my voice, which is the end I use the first recording as I effectively nailed it the first time around (which I have a habit of doing usually anyway).
I hope people can tell me what they like and dislike about the track, just remembering that I'm not a proffional singer, I'm a pianist, and not applying for Xfactor. Please leave constructive comments and at least say something before voting me down (as it really doesn't help me at all in the long run, and saying what went wrong, will be able to sort out my artistic direction and of you really hate it, I would be less inclined to make another track in this style again).
This song was scored and lyriced in loving memory of Johanna King which was my Girl friend during high school and sadly passed away a year after leaving school. I went out with her for five and half years and she was apart from being my girlfriend, she was an extremely close friend. I thought I was going to be with her for the rest of my life and was set to propose to her that summer. She died just before easter due to complications with infection after a major operation. I wish I could turn back time so I could see her again, or even had the chance to say goodbye. But in life that type of thing very rarely happens.
Because of this anniversary of Jo's death, I am re-writing "My Girl" as well which I may release in the coming week. Both Turn Back Time and My Girl are heavily lyriced in such away, to attempt for myself to come to terms with what had happened.

I know how many times you have re-written this piece and listening to the original and this, you seem to be much more settled on the overall vocal track. Very deep.
Easy on the ears
