Rex: Origins Rap

One of the downsides of going to Game Jam without a team is you have to take care of back-end work as well as the aesthetic of your project, all in 42 hours. At its worst, that entails going down to your dorm's practice room at 5am with a kazoo and recording equipment to make a beat and rap over it.

This was done in one take so it's a bit sloppy and there are some mistakes here and there. As stated in the song, I had written and recorded this before I had finished level design. Ergo, making this sound perfect was low on my priority list.

Your verses are perfect, and the mix sounds great on speakers, but it falls flat on headphones, which is weird. Usually that's the other way around. Your flow is standing out above the instrumental, which is good, but that mix is very raw and flat. Needs a lot of doctoring with EQ, compression, etc., in order to sound good.

What you've proved with this piece is that you don't need fancy VSTs to make entertaining pieces though, so full stars for effort, minus half for upload quality and mastering. Really was torn on giving you a higher score, but for the reasons mention in TaintedLogic's review, quality dragged it down.

That said, if you can make this your gig, master it better, and take yourself seriously enough to do it well, I see a bright future.

Kwing responds:

Thanks! I allowed my rapping ability to go way beyond my knowledge of audio mastering so I guess it's no surprise I got a critique like this.

This is a fun and catchy piece, but I don’t consider it structurally complete. Cool use of sound design, and the rapping was also quite enjoyable. The lyrics came through very clearly despite the fast pace of the song. You pull off the texture quite well here, and you clearly displayed a great sense of rhythm. I was really torn between giving you a 3 and a 7; in the future, I really want to see you flesh out your work and also take it a little more seriously. The arrangement is seriously lacking, and the piece is pretty unpolished. You clearly have a lot of talent, though. Comedic pieces are usually frowned upon in the NGADM, and the addition of the kazoo doesn’t really help your case there. I’m going to help you out here score-wise, but I wouldn’t expect any compassion from the other judges if I were you. Keep at it, man!

Kwing responds:

Thanks for the feedback! Keep in mind I did everything here - the kazoo, the throat singing, the beatboxing, the layering, the writing, the rapping, and the mastering - all during a 42 hour Game Jam while I was programming and animating the game that this came from. Game Jams are notoriously unpolished and what you're listening to is one of the aspects that I really couldn't afford to put more work into.

I decided to submit this to the Audio Deathmatch because it has absolutely zero samples that I don't own, since I made the beat completely from scratch. Not sure if I would have had a better chance submitting something using someone else's beat.

Props for having flow and and having your fingers in other artistic endeavors people could only hop on being as talented.

Kwing responds:

Thanks man! Looks like my music has been surprising my game dev buddies and my games have been surprising my music buddies.

sick bars fam

Kwing responds:

Haha, thanks!

i will be honest, i didn't like the game a lot, but this is perfect

Kwing responds:

Hey, thanks. Both the game and music were made in a crazy rush so I can't blame you if one wasn't your cup of tea.
