My personal #1 rule of melodic screaming music, you CAN NOT scream/growl the whole song. Take Fall Of Troy or Killswitch Engage for example, they would scream a verse but do melodic vocal layers over the chorus. With the constant screaming it creates too much tension that is never released with the beautifully melodic instruments underlying it.
