Stardust

/ˈstɑːˌdʌst/

(Noun):

1) A large number of distant stars appearing to the observer as a cloud of dust
2) A dreamy romantic or sentimental quality or feeling
______________________________________________________________

Wouldn't it be fun
To ride on stardust
To graze the edge of the cosmos
Alone and yet with all
A part of everything

Watching
Waiting
Feeling

Where it all began
Hot flaming
Furnace of creation
Interstellar diversification
A home for everything

Expanding
Rotating
Ending...

Wouldn't it be fun
To write pretentious sounding poetry
And have people think
You were serious for a second
I'm sorry

I mixed this mostly on headphones, and I think it shows. I tried out a new "tube eq" on the master bus to give the song a kind of warm quality, but in retrospect it just sounds crowded. Drum volumes are weird, blah blah, usual stuff, so if ya like it, then ya like it, and if ya don't...

...I'll send ye to the outer depths of the cosmos

Just kidding I'm not that mean

Heel warm" Where it all began
Hot flaming
Furnace of creation
Interstellar diversification
A home for everything"

This sounds so neat and spacey! (I know others have said that too, but really, 'spacey' describes your music so well.)

I really loved the instrumentation you've got going on here. You've got all these almost psychedelic synths that are just really soft and work really well with the reverb-ful drums and pads and whatever panning gritty spacey effect that is that comes in at 2:04. Speaking of 2:04, though, it felt like some of your transitions were a bit forced. 2:04 comes to mind, and so does 2:47. (although I really liked the one you had at 3:16!) Also speaking of 2:04, The melodies there felt like they lacked... something. I don't really think I'm qualified enough to give you specific melodic advice, but here's a bit of melody advice that I find really helpful (hey, that author looks familiar!) - http://www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/comments/1wmtzy/tips_on_writing_melodies/

At 2:47 when the track changes up the most, those eighth note hits were a bit jarring the first time I heard the song, but I've come to enjoy them after listening a few times, especially with the really creative drum fills behind them. I didn't really see a problem with your drum EQs throughout the piece (except for maybe that 2:47 thing being a bit too loud), and the rest of your mixing was pretty nice.

Great work! u r poet

Birdinator99 responds:

Hello, thank you for writing in.

Glad you dig the arrangement. Transitions are kind of bleh, especially 2:47, I agree. Why do these things make sense to me when I do them, but are so easy to pick apart in retrospect? I need to practice more.

The melody at 2:04 is sort of a play off of the bass line from the beginning part. It's...well...it's there. Thanks for the johnfn link -- I read it over, and will probably reference it later too. I do play the tenor saxophone, but I haven't touched it in a while. Probably going to pick up piano lessons in the summer when I have time. Can't believe I haven't done that yet actually.

I really like that delay, so the fact that you pointed it out at all is good enough for me. The mixing is really bad, again, in retrospect. Sounds like someone's holding a blanket over my song. I tried some things that didn't end up helping me all that much, but made sense at the time, I can assure you!

Back to the, uh, mixing board.

I enjoyed your NGAUC piece! Knew I recognized you from somewhere...

This song is done in a style that I recognize as very you.

That is, I've never heard a song like it from any other composer, though I've heard several like it from you.

How should I describe it... those lingering organ and pad notes, that slide up and down instead of changing notes with a punch. I'm not doing a very good job of it. Well, you probably know what I mean anyway, and I can point out which ones it's similar to later if you want.

I would call it the best in its style from you so far. I really like your placement of the drum hits throughout the song. Especially when those "paper-fan" style drums start layering over top of themselves around 3:00. It feels neat, like they're drawing a box around my head or something.

I felt a bit lost during my first listen. I didn't have any clue as to what would happen next. This may be due to my unfamiliarity with this style, since I only had your previous pieces to draw on. Due to that I did draw heavily on my recollection of those pieces while listening to this one, which may have lead me to view it as "one of them" and as such place my expectations of it lower than they should have been, resulting in less appreciation of it on the first listen.

On subsequent listens however I started to get a feel for how it goes, and though it feels a bit "out there", I like it. I guess space is pretty "out there" too.

Good job once again!

Birdinator99 responds:

I know what you mean. Everything here is exactly what "I" would do... it's addicting! I already know which songs it sounds similar to though, because I think of them when I write/arrange -- It's not a coincidence!

The drum delay was a new application of a plugin I've used before. Glad you like.

I like doing weird things with structure -- sometimes not knowing what's next is a good thing. When I listen to radio (which is rare), I hear lots of pop songs that all have the same structure, the same layout...it's frustrating, and it makes me want to...rebel, I guess. I have no problem not being totally satisfied with my mix, or my arrangement in the end (there are many things I would do differently if I were to redo this one) as long as I try my best to bring my...uniqueness to the table. I don't make this stuff to be popular or to rake in the dough (total earnings: $15 in NG store credit haha), I do it because it's a passion. So while I will shake up the structure once in a while to keep you interested, for now I kind of am happy that you "didn't have any clue", in a weird way.

Sorry if that didn't make any sense -_- I hope I actually responded to your concerns (reading comprehension is hard sometimes)
