Melancholy Hill - Change (AIM 2023)

Greetings, fellow travelers.

Im very excited to share my first ever AIM entry for 2023! This was done in a span of a week, and i have never even dared to think about putting together an artistic combination like this in that period of time, since most of my projects took multiple weeks to make, if not months. Needless to say, im very pleased, like always.

The artwork of my choice called "Summer Storm" was crafted by the magnificant, and spiritual landscape-maker himself, @artoast8p. I saw this particular painting on the frontpage one day, and I couldnt have asked for a better sign by the Spirit. You should check out his artisanship!

I originally didnt intend to put this track under the Melancholy Hill name, but seeing how it turned out, and how it resembled the style and feel of my original works, i have decided to give it a single-like release under the MH badge.

So, in typical Melancholy Hill fashion, this is the part where I break down the song, give an analysis, and share the technical, artistic, and spiritual details and processes that went into the song.

The beginning is calm, and relaxing. The smooth guitar tone, third harmonies, wind and bird chirping puts us in a meditative state, and it makes us feel at ease with nature, and everything else.

Then gradually, the thunders roar like Zeus's manifested anger, dark clouds surround the sky, and we slowly wake up to the field that is now our personal warzone. The atmosphere that was once full of light and color, was infected with darkness and grayness.

Like the sky, the guitar starts to roar as well. Gradual build up, until we get to the first breakdown.

From that point on, the aggresive melodies and rhythms, show us glimpses of anger, pain, and the willpower that drives us forward to fight through this storm, at all costs.

Then all of a sudden, the bridge appears. Rain starts falling, like the tears from the eyes that begs to see the light of day again. The piano also adds a melancholic touch, a trademark one at that. We are blinded away by the clouds, the toxic poison of our unjustified hatred against the things that we cannot control, and we slowly feel withering away. But the second build up comes, and we realize that the only way to defeat hatred, is passion. Love and faith in ourselves, the people surrounding us, and the Spirit for guiding our way to a higher level of being.

The second breakdown comes, along with a kickass solo section. The guitar here sings like the soul that wants to break out the cage of the storm, and liberate itself to achieve the passion that it looks for. The main riff is also a bit more melodic and uplifting here, to signify the positive mindset that we have to have in order to climb the mountain, overcome obstacles, and cast the sun up in our world, that gets rid of the clouds once and for all.

And then, it ends. The clouds divide, the sun opens, but the rain here are not sad tears. They are tears of relief, pride, and love, as our reward for lasting in the face of horror, without running away. We come full circle with the closing riff, which is a bit more melancholic and different in tone character, meaning that while we endured the misery, we will never be the same again, as the experience is now a part of ourselves. The song ends. Everything goes on, until another hurdle presents itself, that we must conquer.

Summer Storm is a reference here. The deepest points in our lives can (and often do) come at our highest, our peeks, our tops. Change is a process that many people underestimate: within it, there is always a progress, whether its up or downhill. A path that's never constant, and most importantly, never stops. Every pain, every misery, every horror that a soul can endure, leads to something greater than all negativity combined in the universe.

And this is why, we must keep climbing.

Thank you everyone so much for being here with me! I dont know how will my first attempt at AIM will go, but I do hope that you will appreciate this nostalgic piece, that throws me back to the first days of my artistic journey. I had fun making this, and im very happy to craft music again that has a deeper message embedded within, like in the old days.

Keep climbing, never give up, and ill see you at the top!

Great!

(disclaimer: AIM judge review here! these are just my opinions and thoughts, you can take from them whatever you like! music is subjective and all that. <3)

so much to love about all the guitar parts here - the gorgeous clean intro, the polyrhythms of the riffing, the occasional changeups in effects or chordal phrases, the shifts in tone. feels like you've got all that stuff down pat, and they all add up to a nicely paced tune filled with change but flowing naturally. the field recordings are also a nice touch for both adding some extra emotion to the tune and for calling back to the artwork you chose, this beautiful nature landscape full of contrast and turmoil.

one thing i thought was interesting here is how high-passed the drums sound - if there were more of a bass presence in the song it might be less apparent, but overall i thought that region felt a bit lacking. keeping them out of the way of the more prominent instruments does make sense but i expected something stronger down below if it's not the kick doing work. the rest of the mix sounds quite nice, again with the guitar front-and-center that's obviously drawing the most attention, and rightfully so. it rocks. definitely a cool take on the storm - it's here and then it's gone, and life goes on.

You made my day Dami, thank you very much!

AIM 2023 Judge Review

I love hearing the variety of metal tracks this year and I'm totally here for this introspective take on a thunderstorm. It seems like there was a lot of thought put into how these sections play out and I think everything really comes together to portray this passing of the storm. You get a lot of mileage out of this guitar-heavy piece - I feel like a lot of interesting ideas were being explored in the melody and using the guitar's growling, distorted sound is a great choice for a wailing thunderstorm. I especially like the section at 2:55 where the repeating notes go through phasing changes, which is a nice preceding section to the introduction of the piano.

The only issues that come to mind here have to do with the impact of the notes and the mixing of the drums. I feel like this track does not hit as hard as the composition makes it seem like and I believe a big part of it is that the drums. I think they definitely could have been louder, particularly the bass drum and snare, which feel present but not prominent. The other aspect is that in the beginning metal section from 1:11 to 2:55, I feel like those repeating notes could be a little more snappier (like the ones around the 1:44 mark for instance). It might be the background accompaniment or the notes being held a little too long, but I feel like the track loses a lot of energy from not having those notes cutting clean as they repeat and thus there's not a lot of impact when the repeating notes play.

Overall, I think you have the narrative structure down well in terms of portraying the storm. I really enjoyed the melodic starting section, particularly the little rising of that guitar note at 0:48-0:49 leading up to the start of the first harder-hitting section. I found it pretty intriguing how you describe this passing of the storm like a hill to climb, which to me was strange given how the art is showing what appears to be relatively flat land. I get the title of the collection and the climbing of the metaphorical hill as the overcoming of obstacles or challenges in life. It just seemed weird given that braving a storm also is a similar metaphor to what you're describing and would have been more appropriate to this concept and the art. Even the track seems to conclude a little similarly to how it started, with the ambience and the solemn melodic guitar. In the end, I still think this track does a good job at reflecting the art in motion and it still works in conjunction with its inspiration.

BBaNK responds:

You are a legend RSK! Thank you so much.
